Comp structure. If you get commissions from cases assigned to you that you did not bring in, and what your referral cut would be if you do bring in a case. I’d also ask what types of cases you’ll have (pre-suit vs in-suit and MVA vs premises, labor law, etc) along with how many you’ll have with what type of support system

like

Thank you!

Find previous employees on LinkedIn and ask them what it’s REALLY like working there and what you can expect.

I second the comp structure comment - I worked at a PI firm for nearly 10 years (as a paralegal, not an attorney). I worked for a partner at the firm who would keep the good cases and reassign the crappy ones to associates - they would deal with the client, work up the case, settle, etc but my attorney would bank the majority of the fee because he generated it. PI is a lot about who you know, so networking is a must - generating cases is key to making good money. Maybe the smaller firms are different, but at the one I worked at, most people (paralegals and attorneys) were severely burnt out (due to our monthly quotas of settling cases and making a minimum atty fee) and had a poor WLB.

Thanks for the insight!

I jumped from Family Law to PI. Best decision ever. I love reading medical opinions, files, and investigating/advising on liability. Are you going to be plaintiff or defendant?

Probably plaintiffs

We’re looking for Plaintiff PI in Washington State

I agree with all the above. If you go into medical malpractice then you need to have someone who can read medical documentation and listen to clients to find if there is causation and damages.

Ask what your case load will be and what type of paralegal support you will have.

Hi,
What skill set is required for IT business Analyst?

Hi everyone, I'm new to Canada and want to start my career here in the Financial and Banking industry. I have passed the CFA level 2 exam and was wondering if I have to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) as most of the job postings here mention about it. I saw that if someone passes at least the CFA level 1 exam then the requirement of CSC is exempted. Can anyone enlighten me about this? As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.

Any experience working @ Chad Jones law?
I’m currently discontent with my income.
(3rd year. Salary=80k and no performance incentive. I brought in $1.4mm AFTER partners claimed over half of fees on my big cases.)
I see CJL offers an incentive+ base but I’m curious about that structure.
Any good or bad firm culture to speak of?
Is it impossible to actually earn a respectable incentive bonus?
Am I going to have some partner come cut me out of any cases where I might actually make a solid fee?

Hello All,
I am finishing up my second year of practice as a lawyer. I transitioned to plaintiffs pi work from a boutique commercial litigation firm. I like the work and not having to bill. The issue I am having is managing volume. I have about 150 active files some pre-lit and the rest are in litigation. Cases range in value from very small to low six figures. I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)
