Hi there. I’ve been married to a vet for 24 years. I love all animals, but cats are some of the most low maintenance pets you can have. Costly? Maybe if they have pervasive health issues, but that is not usually the case. My hubs is a rescue vet and the group he works with heavily vet( no pun meant) the animals they adopt out. All the cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and blood tested for the scary stuff. When they go to their forever home they are healthy. All the adopters usually have to do is the annual vet visit. Cats do best indoors and are great apartments/condo pets too. They are very long lived, and bond well with adopters. We’ve had many cats over the years, fosters and ones we have adopted. I can’t emphasize enough how great the are, and how much we have loved/ love them. Highly recommend getting a cat. 🐈⬛

You've convinced me! Glad your experiences with cats have been good ones. Now, to convince my husband...
Do fostering. The animal shelter will buy the food.

I did not know that was a thing! Such a smart idea.
Cats are low maintenance and just their purr alone is beneficial to your health. I’m a cat lover though and may be biased but this sped teacher appreciates my big pretty Tom cat when I’m feeling stressed.

It sounds like you have a wonderful feline companion! That is something I would look forward to if we do get the cat.
Consider where you live and what kind of cat would work for you first. If it can't be an outdoor cat then yes it will be a lot of work and an imposition. We have an outdoor mouser that occasionally comes in. it's very independent. We can leave for days and just leave several bowls of food hidden in different places so it spaces out it's eating. In reality it has no troubles feeding itself on small animals. We have an older house with a basement and need a mouser.
Cat's can be a nice pet, but consider your needs and wants first. If the cat can't be left alone then it will at times cause you frustration. Cat's all develop personalities which you have no control over. If you want a certain temperament then you'll want to find a grown cat.
When you add up all of the costs of vaccinations and treatments shelters are generally the cheapest. Make sure it comes already fixed.

I appreciate your thoughts! I never even considered temperament... but you're right. I would want a chill cat that enjoys cuddling to help relieve anxiety. Thanks for all your suggestions!
Another idea. I work with a cat rescue non profit and our students do volunteer work experience there. They are constantly looking for volunteers. They honestly need people to just come in and socialize with cats so they remain tame and can be adopted. Maybe some volunteering would fulfill your feline feelings.

Also another helpful idea! There are a few shelters nearby that I'm sure would love some volunteer help.
