This is a bad take OP. I think it’s pretty clear he means that there are times when it is appropriate to set and maintain boundaries. Many juniors have trouble understanding when those times are, and hence put themselves in a bad situation by screwing their team over.
But responsibility for this can’t be dumped entirely on the juniors. It’s the seniors’ job to tell juniors when those busy times will be and to communicate that the junior should expect to be working more than usual at those times.
We don’t really have approved leave at law firms. OP is specifically commenting on law firms, which is vastly different from a normal company. I have never in 11 years had to seek out “approval” for time off. You are just expected to get your work done and take time off when your schedule permits.
It’s on the junior if they plan a vacation the week before a major filing is due, for example.
Being an attorney isn’t a 9-5 job and your ethical duties to the client means sometimes your personal plans will be impacted by your professional responsibilities.
Seems pretty reasonable though imo, if you've got a big filing and advanced notice of time ooo, you all should have the scheduling for that figured out well in advance. Have a different associate do it or have a schedule in place or w/e.
this is the reality of a law firm though... if you don't like it, you could go in house
Did you read the post? I’m not disagreeing with what he’s saying because it’s common sense. No one simply disappears for days on end. My point is this overreaction to an innocuous comment about work life balance screams insanity.
