Thoughts on CMA vs CPA in big 4 tax practice?

I don’t understand how the CMA will ever be more accepted over the CPA. The CPA is a much tougher exam then the CMA is and CPA is considered the gold standard of accountancy already. People know what you went through to get it and accept it.

Though I’ve seen CMAs in industry. One of my F100 clients allows it as an accept cred as they require a CPA, CMA, Bar, or others to be promoted to manager or higher

CMA is completely irrelevant for big 4 tax

like

You don’t want to be in Big Four tax without a CPA. Maybe get a CMA in addition if it’s important to you, but no one will take you seriously if you get the CMA instead.

like

Until this post I had never heard of CMA. That’s how irrelevant it is for big 4 tax

Thanks D1.

I don’t think you can practice before the IRS with a CMA. At least, I’ve never seen it on the list so I dought the big 4 accept it

You might be right. Assuming you have EA for the IRS. Any benefit of doing CMA vs CPA? I hear it is more appealing as an exit option

Agreed.CMA not common in practice

Why not both? The CMA is not difficult to pass and obtain. That being said, a CPA is way more important and well known so will carry more weight.

Thank you everyone for the input

I asked one of the partners at my old firm who had it and he said it’s bullshit. When it first was a thing they just required ppl to pay he said

My firm typically does insurance defense, but we take plaintiffs cases here and there. Is it typical that work done by associates on contingency cases isn’t counted toward their billable hour requirements unless and until we receive our fee on the case? This is my first experience with this, but it’s hard for me to reach my hours as is, without spending time on non billable cases like this with no assurance that I’ll see billable credit at the end.

Question: I have a client who started a restaurant. He leased the land and bought shipping containers where he spent money contracting out to turn them into bars. But nonresidential real estate at 27.5 years doesn’t make sense either as it’s not a brick and mortar building. Curious on others thoughts! TIA
