I've always thought it was important too, but what do I know? I think it's probably easier for mega brands like Starbucks to do away with it than smaller companies. They have such clear standards that there shouldn't be a huge disparity between marketing efforts from one region to the next (if I'm remembering correctly, their plan was to eliminate the CMO role and have each region be in charge of its own marketing efforts). I think this would be more challenging at a smaller company that doesn't have the same amount of experience, resources, etc. at its disposal.
I don't know exactly what the CMO does, (I know, I should know but frankly, they are so far above me I don't care) What I fear is that if other companies start to get rid of them, those duties will just trickle down, making our jobs even more demanding and stressful. But what are they going to do with the money saved from not having to pay such an expensive employee? Give the other upper management more bonuses...
It might not be necessary, but we don’t have one currently and I feel like marketing doesn’t have a unified strategy or direction because of it.
I never thought it was necessary. Many companies have a marketing director and a CMO. I don't think that both are necessary and can create confusion.
