My fiancé got approached for a Sales Executive Role at Instacart. Anyone have any insight into the company, job security, culture etc? They mentioned 100k base, 40-60% variable comp and an undisclosed equity grant. She’s already making 130k in a very secure job, so we are thinking no, but want to do our homework first.

I have an initial recruiter phone interview with Square Thursday. Is it it just a phone call or is it a video call and they didn’t specify. If it’s a video call what’s the dress code like? I’m coming from consulting so all my interviews were in suits. Any tips to get past the recruiter phone screen?

Shocked at the responses. WLB IS EVERYTHING AND 90K IS ENOUGH!!! I did a similar move a year ago and thankful everyday of that decision. Do it and don’t look back!
I definitely live in NYC lol been here for 5+ years

Could you do better? Sure. But a lot of people on this app use salary as a certain type of measuring contest.
If you think you'd be happier in that role, it's not an issue. If you're unsure of the $, try holding out and continuing to look.
I wonder if ppl who act like 90k is min wage in NYC realize how ridiculous they look.
Its the company i interned at and had a great experience, but the pay is lower. Ive been at McK 1.5 years and was rated Very Strong so i guess there are more opportunities i can consider but im just so over this lifestyle and the mck culture
Dont do it. 90k isn’t enough in NYC.
You’re leaving McKinsey for a pay cut at $115k? Are you overwhelmed and feel your success at the firm isn’t likely? Seems like you could do better for an exit opportunity if you give it time.
You’re in a good place to maneuver however you want to. I think given the rare position you’re in, you’ll get a lot of pressure to keep with it. Vast majority of Americans never see a $90k salary. But this segment of people on this app have skewed income goals.

I think everyone else here is being a bit ridiculous. Yes you could get more than 90k but if you’re optimizing for WLB and comp isnt your driving factor, 90k is very doable in NYC.
If you decide to optimize for comp later, you always can w/mck on your resume.
I make 85k TC in NYC and have had no issues saving money. I have no WLB and would consider a paycut for a 9-5.
You make more walking dogs in NYC. Probably around $110-150k working 20 hours a week after expenses and employees.

What are the exit opportunities and growth opportunities in the new organization?
Pay cut decisions for WLB are not bad as long as you have calculated what you are getting into and next set of plans from new role and organization.

OP you should be able to negotiate up to match, even with the WLB advantage. Depends on the opp sure but don’t tule it out. My friend left Bain after two years and got a matched salary for the third year level of pay ($125k) + quite a bit of responsibility. Not a typical exit but I know others who have left after 2-3 years and still gotten 100-110 in base
I would keep the WLB thing close to your chest because the company won’t know that that’s what you’re solving for - and also cannot guarantee your hours anyway. So you may as well not get shortchanged on pay as much as possible
That's a pass for me
What’s happening from 5 to bedtime? If that’s more valuable than 115k. I’ll say do it.
I think 90k is more than enough for nyc but I guess mileage depending on spending habits.
Pls fix

I think you can do better— I work for F500 firm in an associate marketing role and I make over 90,000 base. Coming from MCK, I think you can definitely get a F500 great WLB role.:)
Can you give more info on where you work / how did you get into it?
The responses on here are absolutely crazy. I work at McK myself, have a similar salary and am considering a similar move. Life is to LIVE people, not to work. If you will be happier somewhere else, do it - granted it is not a completely impractical decision. But we are talking about a salary that’s DOUBLE or TRIPLE the average American income, and that’s only 2 years out of undergrad. You guys are crazy. Earning 90k is a privilige - even in nyc. Also OP - getting 90K now does not mean you qill get only 90K forever. This is just the beginning of your career :)

Well said, there is a lot of salary shaming on this platform.
How long have you been working at McK and how long have you been feeling this way?
If you’ve just recently started to feel this way I would suggest using up a lot of PTO and taking a nice long break and rejuvenate. You may be dealing with a strong case of burnout but if you’ve been feeling this way for many months... you know what to do

WLB is everything but you can certainly take the right exit. You can’t settle for a pay cut especially in NY. Think about it thoroughly before you consider making that decision
Think this through. 1. What is the growth opp in that role? Does someone have to leave in order to get that next promotion? 2. Are you ok with 0-3% yearly raises, could take you 4 years to increase your salary by 10,000. 3) Have you considered getting an apt in JC, Hoboken, Edgewater? You save on taxes by not paying the local Nyc tax. 4) have you considered transferring your current role to FL, you can save $ on tax to speed up your savings so later on it can help you quit and get a wlb Role. It also gives you more options of things to do after a long day of work.
How confident are you about the WLB cut? I think sometimes we overestimate non consulting WLB - all jobs are hard in their own way. Don’t want to end up taking a pay cut for same efforts
90% i interned at this alternate company
At McK too - are you a BA - and then 115 is base based on your rating right?
Mentor
I’m also really confused - are you a third year BA? For Class of 19 C&A base is ~105
