Wanna have a more financially stable year! Had my first corporate job last yr. Made 68k. I’m about 17k in debt with loans/credit cards. Credit is around 580 more or less depends on which version you’re looking at. 120k in student loans. Where do I start????

I don’t agree with everything Dave Ramsey says but when it comes to finance fundamentals and getting out of debt and becoming financially literate he’s a great place to start. Watch his videos and follow his baby steps. Thousands of people have paid off hundreds of thousands in debt. I’d first start by cutting the credit card, and attack the 17k in debt with smallest balance first. Then go after the student loans.

I need to learn how to get through this moment. This moment where I transition from living above to within. It’s PAINFUL right now.

Read up on how to pay off your credit card debt and have it help your score - especially with an apartment and a car in the future. There are certain times in the credit card month that can help your score.

I would say -
Immediate goal:
$1000 emergency fund. Even if it is $20/ week.
With a long term goal of 3 months of expenses. (Think current expenses + car payment + apartment)

Items to research:
Apartments typically want 1st, last and a security deposit. And then there is moving fees. In my area, it would be about $5,000 upfront.

Cars - some loans will require a down payment. And then there is insurance. In my area, that down payment is 2,000-5,000 depending on the car.

As for student loans - make sure you have signed up for the SAVE program. Your provider should have that information for you.

Set a goal to pay off your credit card debt. But first, set up your emergency fund.

I have some opportunities that bring in about $500-1k a month. I just emailed a part time job that I’d like to move forward with, but it’s been since Thursday since I haven’t heard back. Hoping it’s all good. Thanks for the advice!

Seeking feedback on GAP insurance. I had a family member who purchased a car in June or July. They were in an accident last week and it sounds like the car will be declared a total loss. Never dealt with this before, so wanted to ask if anyone has ever had an instance where the insurance didn't cover the outstanding balance of the loan and the insured then owed money? Car was $35k, $7k down, finance $28k. Gap insurance is through lender, not auto insurer.

I stopped contributing to my 401K for the last three months in order to pay off credit card debt. I am 28 and have about 68K in my 401K. Was this a smart decision? I want to get out of debt as quickly as possible and I have no student loans or car debt.
