What are some examples of microaggressions and racism you've faced in Big Law?

I'll start. One partner told me that I was only hired for diversity purposes when I was a first year. Another told me that I was staffed on a matter to fulfill a diversity quota because the client wanted a diverse team. Another partner remarked that he didn't get into my alma mater (a T14) because he wasn't a poc like me.

Assuming my role isn't legal. That I'm a secretary, translator, the Plaintiff and assistant in work settings. Weird ad hominem attacks from opposong counsel. I have two science degrees (BS, MS) and a career prior to law and haven't seen anything like this tbh.

Please leave wherever you’re working

likehelpful

I haven’t really experienced any. But I primarily work for POC partners. Sounds like you maybe you should start looking elsewhere.

like

I wish this was even an option for me

like

OP - are you still at this firm working with the same partners? While I respect your ability to persevere in this kind of environment, you shouldn’t have to. Either report these partners or leave. Or both. This kind of nonsense has to stop. The next POC may not be able to handle this kind of behavior and it could derail their entire career, which would be unfortunate when there was an opportunity to make sure it didn’t happen to anyone else.

likehelpful

I'm in the process of leaving. Secured an offer elsewhere and in the middle of conflicts check.

likehelpful

Yes, I have experienced all of these. Doing good work did not save me. In fact, my doing good work bred resentment and made me a target. It doesn’t make sense from a work product perspective, but it does from the psychology of resentment. Certain people don’t like to see women of color be powerful and effective lawyers, and outshine them.

OP — please discuss your situation with a plaintiff-side employment lawyer. You may be able to negotiate an exit package, which could be helpful to you financially and also send a message that such behavior will be called out.

like

Do good work. Let your work product speak for itself.

like

Yep, this is it. I had to develop thick skin and resilience to survive in this profession. Now, nothing fazes me anymore. I let my work product speak for itself!

The point I brought up was completely ignored yet a similar point (just slightly different) point made by a white associate gets praised. Having junior associates go to a partner to request a white man less senior or familiar with the matter than me, just to act as an “airdropped” leader of the team.

likehelpful

OP, which firm is that? You should tell your DEI person.

like

I have gotten that last one a lot. So often.

Wow. Unbelievable but believable. Just wow.

I'm a cashier. We just got a new manager, and she's making things really hard for us. She starts work at 4:30am and leaves around 2:30pm, but she still expects us to stay until 6pm and work on the weekends! She gives us really long shifts and doesn't give us much time for breaks. And when we ask her about it, she gets mad.

I'm worried that if I speak up, she'll make my life even harder. I don't want to lose my job because of this—do you guys have any advice?

I started working for a new law firm, much larger than the firm I was working for previously. The main attorney that I work under had noticed some mistakes I was making (I am a NY paralegal who took this position with the understanding that they’d be teaching me NJ and NYC real estate). Anyways, the attorney decided to tell the HR manager about the mistakes I had been making. Rather than HR discussing with me, the manager told my dramatic coworker to tell me..how should I handle this? Very hurt!

I kind of feel that the HR I am talking with isn't that approachable. Is this kind of a norm. In VOIS. I am little hesitant to proceed with accepting the job offer from VOIS due to this.

Is this usually the norm in VOIS, where HR are quiet like this

Hi People,
Please give me a rough estimate on how much hike we can expect in my annual salary revision. I expected 8LPA when I joined. They gave me 5LPA with a promise of revision in 3months after joining. They inc it to 7.75LPA after 4m and during appraisal cycle gave 25k 11months to make it to 8LPA. In Oct my hike is due, so I would to like negotiate my hike. Please let me know how much I can ask for.

PHEV (specifically, RAV4 Prime) yay/nay?

Expected use case:
Family car
Low mileage (<10-11k / yr)
4-5 days a week expecting less 30 miles per day
Weekends 100-200 miles altogether (occasionally)
Rare road trip use (1x or 2x / yr; <300 miles one way)
Have garage (to charge at home)

Chief Concern: "Best of both worlds" in engineering can mean compromises and complications, which can mean non-resilient/unreliable. But I'm no gearhead, so not sure if I'm making massive incorrect assumptions.

Grade my allocations!

VTI - 50%
VXUS - 15%
VUG - 15%
QQQ - 10%
VYM - 5%
FALN - 5%
