Weekend - hiking. Weekday - bed time story
2-4 was tough for me, since they just don't have decent attention spans, so it was all about "what can we do, from leaving the house to returning, in under 2-4 hours. For us that was dictated by our neighborhood/location. We got a zoo membership (only 15-20 minutes away), we did a lot of neighborhood and alley bike rides (progressed from balance bike to regular bike pretty quickly), and trips to the library. The key was doing things that could be easily and quickly be cut short for when they inevitably hit the losing interest/melting down point
2-4 really just the same stuff but at a smaller scale (and maybe no movies or video games). At that age for us it was really about survival and killing time. So a schedule like this if I’m with them alone all day:
7am wake up, diaper, milk, read for 30 min, breakfast
8am drive somewhere it was always easy for me to contain them in the car :) listen to songs etc
9am get somewhere could be zoo, a nice library in another town, Childrens museum etc
11am head home, fast and easy lunch on the way chipotle or Panera were favorites
12:30pm nap (and I would watch tv or do
Some work)
3pm get up and do something active like playground, swimming, go for a long walk, stop at 7-11 and let them pick out a snack
5pm back home, dinner
6pm bath and books
7pm sleep
Whew. But do this a couple days a month and you are such a hero for your wife!
