What do you say when someone non-consulting asks what you do? Having a tough time explaining. Calling myself a consultant gives scammer vibes

Best explanation I’ve ever heard was, “we’re like doctors but for companies.”

like

Hate the doctor line, unless you mean Dr. Oz because we don’t really fix the company’s health we just sell them magic fixes that won’t really work. That I’ll agree with.

I say Project Manager because even though I’m not, there’s enough overlap and the broad strokes of PM is widely understood enough that people have a general idea of what I do. Nobody outside consulting knows wtf an EM is.

I say I'm a politician to avoid the scammer vibes.

I tell people I work for an audit firm. This normally keeps people from
asking more questions.

Ask them if they have seen “The Accountant”

Say you do Audit or IT implementation or project management. Just say what you actually do on the daily instead of saying “consultant”

Doctor for businesses!

I have an MD in BS 🤣

“Businesses hire consultants to help solve a problem… a problem can range from strategic cost reduction, identifying ways to retain and attract talent, to helping implement a software into their current system.”

Yeah it’s a hard one. I just pretend I work in the industry I consult for. People understand but realise they don’t care and move on unless they have a particular interest.

I always say ‘financial analyst’ even to the immigration officer when I am returning back to the US on my work visa (H-1B).

I do supply chain so I just say ‘supply chain stuff’.

Hatchet man of capitalism

I’m in performance improvement so I just say I set up and manage programs to increase process efficiencies in client factories

I call myself a consultant. If they ask, I just say I help companies identify ways to make more money

Strategy!

I say that I’m a consultant and it is really two jobs. For clients it’s solving whatever problem they have, and I do that by having a lot of experience problem solving from the perspective of a neutral third party. For my company, it’s managing people, budgets, and corporate initiatives to support the other consultants. The internal activities are what usually resonate with non-consultants.

Anyone witness slackers who got into companies you have no idea how? Had a coworker who does jack chit at work besides chatting on Facebook yet lands at a faang company? I guess if he brings the same work ethic he will be spit out for sure. Or maybe he just had no interest in doing project work.

I work at a ‘free market’ firm and have developed a very good reputation among partners. Naturally, they are drowning me in work. Each time a new case comes up, the partner will email asking if I have “time and interest” in helping. When I’m at capacity, I take these words at face value and explain why I can’t do it, and that seems to work out ok with no hard feelings. But what’s the “interest” thing? If I don’t want to work on a toxic tort case, do I just say that and pass?

2. You would ask questions, and whoever is able to answer it, you will give some merchandise only to them?, And the other people are not your employees?
Why are you even organizing it? You think people would come from far places just for lunch?

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). I’m getting my computer science degree, so I would like to do something more technical in the workplace when I graduate. How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?
