My wife started as an M at Accenture earlier this year coming from industry. I’ve never worked at Accenture or any b4, but I had to explain to her how up or out works. She also didn’t know that she came in with 24 months at level and what that meant. Really surprised none of this was communicated during hiring or by her manager.

You want to go to a full service firm where you can interact with attorneys in other practice groups to get a better idea of how your practice impacts the client’s operations as a whole. You also don’t want to refer out future work for future clients to other full service firms - I.e., if one of your clients needs help with a real estate or IP issue. You want to provide your clients a full range of service and not risk losing work to the firms you refer to
I did this, and it hasn’t been a great upside because my rate is so high at the full service firm that clients choose to take their L&E business at a big 4 to save money. Also the bonuses suck where I’m at, and I could make more overall at the big 4 firm I left. I genuinely feel like my growth as an attorney has been stunted as well because at the big 4 I was trusted, had direct contact with clients, and managed my own cases. Where I’m at now, the work is not as enjoyable, and I have limited direct client contact
Keeping non L&E work in house is the biggest upside that big 4 can’t argue against.
