I tend to lean towards this role, because I started out as a Flash Designer. I have worked with Creative Techs from a variety of backgrounds, including video, animation or even software engineering. Most creative techs can code.
It really is a hybrid role. For me,
it is a designer with a strong technical background, someone who can animate and code.
The career paths of creative technologists are pretty varied. Some end up as CTO’s or Director of Creative Technology at companies. Some stay in the title of Creative Technologist or Senior Technologist their whole careers. Some start as Creative Technologists, but end up transitioning to traditional development roles where there are more open job descriptions for. And others start as Creative Technologists but transfer into general creative fields like copywriting or art direction and take their creative technology skills as more of a maker or experimental mindset moving forward to get traditional creative CD jobs at experiential or interactive agencies.
It really all depends on who you are and your career. If you’re a Senior AD, it might be good to keep that title, but look for jobs that have a maker mindset that you can leverage. Finding true creative technologist jobs are hard to find and even harder to get.
