Strat directors run projects and sometimes small teams. VPs run multiple teams, are more involved in department operations, scoping, staffing and hiring and endless pitching in addition to working on projects.
As a Director I was more concerned about the projects/accounts I was on. As a VP I have way more responsibility for the entire dept’s performance; the revenue we bring in, the service offering and operations. It’s like a group strategy director + chief of staff (to the CSO) role.
I’m in the same office as mine but he’s global, so I run the US team across 4 different cities.
And yes the VP title is weird, I had my first one 9 years ago as a VP/Director. The VP part meant nothing at that job.
In many agencies, VP/Strat Director are one and the same. Sometimes VP is given as a vanity promotion. Don’t worry about the title- focus on comp and job description.
