What’s your take on discussing pay with coworkers? At my last job, I was able to use it as leverage when asking for a raise but now that I make a comfortable amount, I’m less adamant about finding out what everyone makes to use as leverage. Curious what everyone’s take is on this!

I wouldn’t do it. If someone doesn’t think you add as much value as them but they find out you make more they may be petty and try to undermine your work - or worse - they could go to HR (just like you’re trying to) and say…I’m way better than so-and-so but they make X and I make Y…thereby making HR re-think if you’re overpaid. In this economy, keep yourself off the comp radar. If you want to benchmark your salary go interview for similar roles and see what they offer.

Great advice. Thanks for sharing!

I think it really depends on the situation. It can be helpful for spotting pay gaps and giving people better context, but I also get why not everyone feels comfortable having those conversations. I’m generally in favor of it, as long as it’s coming from a good place and not just turning into comparison for the sake of comparison.

Very true! Thanks for the reply.

At a lot of companies I don’t think you can really use it as leverage. HR has ownership over it so that you can’t get one-off exceptions for specific circumstances.

Yeah, I think it definitely matters how big the corp is too

Would you take a freelance gig that would be a promotion (with potential to join full time) with a smaller company whose values you really agree with, OR a full-time offer for a lateral move with a larger company with teammates you know and trust? Of course factoring in all the nuances of covid. TIA!

Hi all. I am trying to determine if I am being compensated fairly. I am a tax manager (about to start my second year as manager) and have been with EY since staff 1. I was promoted to manager in June 2020 (during covid) and received a 7.5% raise. The class above me has mentioned they received much higher raises during their promotion years. My base salary is now approx. 97K. Any insights would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

hey, I joined Deloitte in June 2020 as an GPS SA analyst, I just staffed on internal project only providing me adjusted utilization. My target promotion year on TOD is 2022. My manager said we might sell to client and extend this project in September but nothing guaranteed.

Just found out that end of the year I will be promoted from analyst directly to VP and since it’s such a large jump I’ll be the lowest paid VP in asset management at only $135k TC. Should I stay it out and wait for TC to align or take the promotion and jump ship bc I will likely get paid more elsewhere given how recruiters/other companies eat up hiring recently promoted ppl from other firms?

CTR, contracts and department overhaul

our marketing dept is undergoing a complete overhaul. under old leadership, a $75k 12-mo contract was signed to a marketing group that handles our SEO, blog and everything Google Ads. All things I can and am in training to do. Current CTRs on G ads seem pitiful at no more than 0.75%. My meta ads coast around 4-6%. During this overhaul, would it be wise to not renew our contract, and negotiate for me to take over these roles and leverage a raise?

Are there any fundamental differences between a salary negotiation during the start (applying for the job) vs. Salary negotiation during a performance review (you’ve been employed for x time and looking for a raise).
