For me it wasn't a client or patient. The only reason I ended up in this career in the first place was watching my friend go through social services with a newborn, while fleeing a domestic violence situation. While she eventually made it, she lost her child. If she had been given help from the beginning, if she had been working with someone who understood her culturally and emotionally could understand what she was going through, her son would still be with her and they could have gotten to safety sooner. We're still close friends and I'm grateful everyday that I can help people who are in similar situations.
I had a severe case of imposter syndrome in the early days of my career. Until one client made me realize that my presence alone will help them. You may only be good at something as you are right now, but you will be 100 times more effective a few years from now. No matter what, you’re going to be doing something for them at this moment.
In my first job as an MSW I worked with someone middle aged who made 1 very bad choice leading to a one year prison sentence. My whole work with her was about how she viewed herself. I used CBT mainly. She was very well-educated and I felt the imposter syndrome a lot working with her.
She wrote a letter when I left the agency - it basically indicated that my efforts worked. She credited me for helping her see herself as a flawed person who made a mistake instead of a monster.
I always find it interesting when I work with a patient who has similar issues to my own. Helping them through those issues is always equally therapeutic to me as well.
