The new company I’m at now sent me an email from an email address that was HR@companyName.careers saying I was accepted for the position. They gave me paperwork to fill out and sign to accept the position
I fill out the paperwork and send it back to them and it goes through… then a few days later I go back to the email to say something else and I get this…?
Then today I got a check from the company In the mail to setup my home office, and it’s signed by someone I’ve never met before or heard of…?
What…..

God that sounds incredible. Wanna trade jobs?
I want this! I do enough outside of work that this would be a dream come true
You could always partake in the professional development resources or assist your team. Talk to your Manager about tasks you could take off their plates.
Try finding a local or regional firm that specializes in auditing local governments. That’s what I do. WLB is pretty good for public accounting.
Not if you’re in any role other than the partner
I worked in local government, State and Fed.
At each place, some departments were overwhelmed with work and some had almost none. I’d look into different agencies/departments that might be a better fit.
The politics and downtime got to me, so I transferred to government consulting. I have a six week busy season each year (65-70 hours). The rest of the year is an average of 45/week.
Find an identity outside of work. There has to be more to you than accounting. Find something you love to do. For me, that's creative writing. For you, it could be just about anything.
But to answer your question, yes, there's absolutely a middle ground. I'm still in public accounting but I bet you can find an in-between job in industry. Most government level employees in finance/accounting don't seem to be all done by 4:30 at least from what I've seen from the auditor side.
