My career has actually flourished since I stopped drinking. I think practicing the principles of AA at work have made me more promotable. I actually think people bs more when drinking and connect more when they’re sober at work
I’m sober 7 years and one thing I hate about work is the drinking culture. Seems like the real bonding and professional development happens at the bars, or company-sponsored, in-office “happy hours.” I choose to exclude myself because in my experience a sober person puts drinking people on edge and also I just don’t like being around drinking. I live with it, because my addiction problems are my problems, not theirs—still, it’s hard not to feel excluded. Sometimes I wonder where my career would be if I could drink responsibly. (Dead end train of thought, I know.)
At my office it’s pretty much me and the BYU grads who don’t drink. Agree CD1 that my career is still better for my sobriety. Not really complaining. Well I guess I was complaining. But you’re right; I never could have done what I’m doing now while I was drinking. But that’s my own problem.
