I would not encourage anyone to enter this profession the way it is right now. Especially not for a beginning teachers' salary and the extra duties often handed off to newbies. Even with the serious shortages of teachers all over the country, the discussion is never, "what can we do to support teachers?", or, "what can we take off teachers' plates?", or, "how can we increase teachers' salaries?". It is, how can we recruit people from other walks of life to teach, or how can we fast-track people into the profession without a proper education so we can fill classrooms with warm bodies. Until there is a realization that a great deal needs to be done to fix the issues in this profession, I would discourage anyone from entering it. Maybe, once the shortages get so bad they are forced to, things will change for the better.
Holding out for the moment people start listening to us 🙏🙏🙏
Noooo definitely not - I want my daughters to be able to support themselves and not have to rely on a double income!
I hate to say this but absolutely not. I am trying to imagine what the generation of kids they're going to see coming through there will be, and I can't. Plus all the things that really make our job meaningful -- the human element -- is probably going to be replaced by some much AI we will just be moderators of an electronic education
I don't encourage anyone to become a teacher. I believe it will only get worse.
I would have to, sadly, say no. 60 years ago, teachers were treated like saints. Now, we are treated like garbage. I’d settle for somewhere in the middle: being treated and respected as a human being.
Not a snowballs chance! My 21-year-old daughter said she can’t believe how soft her generation is. She laughed about students asking their parents to e-mail or call when the kid got called out. She said there’s not enough money to make that job worth it. She sat around way too many dining room stories.
Oops!
My husband and I (both teachers) have already planted the seed of “Don’t become a teacher”. Don’t hate me for this. TBH, before we even said it—our kids already voiced their disinterest. Why? They (typical teens) don’t like how we have to budget so much to afford things and also, they see how hard we work outside of contract hours (and don’t get paid for that) and they’re like “Nope!”. Keep in mind—they understand that many other careers make overtime pay, thus that part of it!
I wouldn't even encourage the students that I teach to become one😒
No! Not the way the world is going now. I really worry about the future of our country, youth, and education.
Interesting. I just thought it was me. Glad to see I'm not the only one who would discourage people from going into education. Sadly, I find myself just seeing this as a job. The kids are so entitled and face no consequences. It's sickening. Don't do it. Don't become a teacher.
I would encourage people to become teachers only if they understand the pitfalls that come with the profession. I am grateful to have taught in both private and public schools and have learned from them both. Obviously a state retirement may be worth it to some if they have what it takes to get to the finish line. To God be the Glory for all He has done in helping me out with my teaching career !!! Love y’all teachers for sticking with it!!
Our daughter just went to college talking about being a teacher. We are both teachers and told her don’t do it. She changed majors to something we know will be more rewarding for her interests and involves more money and travel. Things she loves.
This is my 30th year. I definitely did not encourage my children to follow in my footsteps. My son is self-employed and my two daughters are both SLPAs for school districts. They have the same schedule as a teacher, but they don’t have the politics, and ludicrous hoops to jump through, and their salaries are much better.
Not really encourage but if my child wanted to be a teacher, I would support them in their decision. But I would also make sure that they were realistic about what they would be experiencing. I love my job but it's not easy. Teachers are underpaid, overworked, and disrespected. I wouldn't really want them to go through what I did.

I think there are kids who will go into teaching regardless of what their parents say. My nephew was discouraged from going into teaching. He got a degree maybe 7-8 years ago, but is now doing his student teaching- he went back to get his teaching degree.
If your child is not passionate about this profession, they won’t be happy in education.
No way! I discouraged it.
Nope. Not in today’s world.
No. It’s such a shame. I love the teaching and working with the kids. But the extreme hours outside of school are really hard on families. The constant !!! testing and data collection which take away time to actually teach are keeping kids from learning. The lack of support from administration is discouraging. Parents who blame teachers for their own lack of involvement in their children’s education is criminal. The amount of money spent on new and improved materials and strategies that pile up unused in boxes in the corners of my classroom that will never see the light of day are such a waste. Somebody out there is making a lot of money selling this stuff. Seriously, how many reading programs do we need?
No
