Writers, do you feel like your cover letters have to be super clever? Seems like a catch-22 & I won't get an interview if it's too creative (not short or too much personality) or not creative enough.

Yes. Write it like an ad. Keep it concise, confident, and keep 'em hungry for more. Alter the content/tone based on the agency/personnel. Consumer agency? Go for broke (NOT LONG). Pharma? Down a few notches, let them know you've got creative kick but containable. Are you sending it to an HR person, or a CD? Lastly, feel free completely reinvent that bitch every 6months, it'll improve over time and evolve out of your jr stage.

I wrote a very specific cover letter to Riot Games (video game company) citing very specific references to their game in the context of the job. It caught their attention and I got interviews before they realized I wasn't a "good fit"

To be honest no one reads a cover letter and only skims a resume.

I like it to show off my writing while also showing my knowledge of the company. I do think writing a creative, personalized cover letter helps.

@Associate Creative Director 1 So you send blank emails with your portfolio when applying for jobs?

I mean, there's a note, I guess. Like, "Hi, I'm an ACD writer with X years experience. I'd love to chat more about position Y."

I recently had an initial interview for a technical recruiter position. The guy on the phone stated that this is not a 9-5 job and long hours are expected. I proceed to ask how much PTO is offered and he said that is not recommend within the first 6 months of working and the harder you work the more PTO you receive. From that conversation, I saw instant red flags. Any thoughts?

I recently had an interview with HCL and cleared 2 rounds of technical interview. I waited for a week for HR call but no such call was received. I then contacted the POC who scheduled the interview (he is an HCL employee) and he said that I have been shortlisted and will receive HR call shortly. This was 1 week ago and I have still not received any call. Has anyone else faced the same issue? And if yes, should I even expect a call fro HR?

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?

General Question I started tuition reimbursement last year in August. I since have an interview with another job that is paying a lot more. You know how you apply to something not really thinking that job would call back? Should I get an offer, what do I do about tuition Reimbursement? Do they send a check and tell me to pay it? Do they take it out of my 401k? I know a lot of people will say I never shouldve applied but I didn't think too much about actually get a call back when I applied.
