A friend of mine works at Accenture and has been contributing to his Roth 401k. He recently read through all the retirement paperwork and found that they don't offer a company match until 1 year after being with the company. He wants to know of he should roll current contributions into a Roth IRA and stop contributing until he's eligible for the match, then go back to contributing with the match once he becomes eligible.

Can someone help me understand how backdoor Roth works in my situation?

I contribute the $19.5K max to a 401K each year. Would backdoor Roth be (A) the ability to roll $6K of that $19.5K into a Roth? or (B) an incremental $6K that I could contribute to a separate IRA then backdoor into a Roth?

Asked another way, does backdoor Roth allow me to actually contribute $25.5K each year, or does it just allow $6K of my $19.5K contribution to build in a Roth?

Is saving over rated? Starting to think my general strategy/approach to savings. I recently posed a question about why people don’t retire earlier after seeing maxing out your tax accounts (~30K with match) gives you ~70k in today’s dollars (not 70k in 2060 dollars). I was a bit hyper obsessed about saving that extra 2-3k a year and saying no to that extra beach trip or mountain weekend or even a round of golf. I’m a PM at a healthcare tech company. Been in mostly client facing roles for years. 6 months pregnant and just laid off. And 40% of my severance was just taken in taxes .. I anticipate getting a low interest 24 month loan (hoping 0%) next year of about 15k.

I am currently living "paycheck to paycheck" (after maxing retirement accounts). But I have cash savings from inheritance in a HYSA: 15k emergency fund + 20k excess cash.

I can afford to pay the loan in full immediately, but assuming low rate, I don't plan to. What's the best strategy here? I can't just invest my 20k excess cash because I live paycheck to paycheck and can't afford the minimum payments (cont)

-$17K in my emergency fund
-$10k in equity gains on my house

How do you balance retirement savings with shorter term goals? I max Roth IRA and put in 10% to 401k on top of 7.5% employer contribution. But I also want to save for events in 3-10 years like bschool living expenses (tuition will be covered by sponsorship), wedding, down payment, and parents’ retirement. I’m also paying 1k monthly to student loans to get rid of them by EOY 2021. I understand I’ll lose out on tax/compounding benefits, but I’m assuming my future earnings...
