Why would he want to do that? The benefits of a 401k stand, regardless of a match. If he has enough to do so, he should max the Roth IRA, max an HSA if he has one, and keep on contributing any extra to the 401k
Not sure what I was trying to say but that is a typo of some sort. Maybe had one more glass of bourbon than I should have. All I was saying is that I would put money in 401k before I put money in a taxable brokerage account
You probably can’t roll from your 401k to an iRA. What would they do instead of contribute to the 401k?
You can’t do in service with drawls except for the after tax 401k. Moot question. If he has enough extra to contribute, Roth 401k is a higher limit and better fees for similar index funds to Roth options. What funds is he invested in is the real question.
Unless the IRA is at fidelity or somewhere with zero index funds. Of course you are getting into minutia at some point. The difference between .01% and zero is $100 per million invested. I am certainly not losing a lot of sleep over that. Plus they may track a little differently and the lower expense ratio benefit is wiped out
