Definitely keep your eye out for art director openings but use the current job to keep up your technical skillset (that will be helpful as you transition to a true AD role). The biggest difference, when you're interviewing at other places, make sure there is a writer there you'll be paired up with OR a writer partner who is hired at the same time as you (maybe you even know someone you want to work with?). That's the single best way to make sure you get more conceptual work. Design will always be a part of an ADs job, but having a partner will allow you to be considered as a true conceptual creative.
I feel like I have a lot of space to learn and make mistakes (strictly in designing) right now but I’m eager to be given more creative responsibilities. My last role included a ton of creative concepting, coming up with and producing ideas, writing so I really miss that stimulation right now. Im really conflicted. Do I, 1) stay here and keep being told what to make, not really using my full creative abilities, and just get better at hard designing/software skills 2) do I look for a role that is more of a hybrid that actually allows me the opportunity for both?
It’s pretty much guaranteed I’ll never be able to go back to concepting/ ideating at this agency because of our structure. So I’ll have to leave at some point... just a matter of when. Love the people I work with so that’s also making it harder 😕 Help...
Have you raised your hand about wanting more conceptual opportunities? Have you offered to pitch in on conceptual assignments? It might mean doing that on top of your current workload but generally hungry people are always welcome on my accounts!
I definitely have. And my previous role was actually at this agency. Unfortunately, because of the structure of my agency, the design/ art direction team doesn’t handle the conceptual assignments. We’re pretty much just a design/ visual team for the concepts we’re presented with... so it was really a one or the other thing here. id love the opportunity to combine these skills in one role but they don’t seem open to that structure here :/
