2001, The A&F store at the mall. Besides the few kids that shopped at Hot Topic every teenager in the tri-state area wore only Abercrombie & Fitch. I have flashbacks to the returns that came in after Christmas, processing and folding clothes in that dark store that reeked of cologne. To this day if I catch a whiff of Fierce, I just want to curl into a ball and cry....
Seriously, HR should give hiring preference to all candidates who have worked customer service. Bonuses should be out given out if you have proof of positive reviews from managers at that time. Literally had some of the worst management ever...."Oh you have a fever of 102°... Well I can't get your shift covered so why don't you just come in and 'try'"
OMG! Hope Les W wasn’t sharing those pictures with Epstein
Worked at a retail store - it was my first exposure to meeting sales targets and making recommendations to people for things they probably didn’t need, kinda like consulting!

Yup, I’ve worked at an airline baggage claim with hundreds of people waiting for luggage after weather cancellations.

It wasn’t a great job, but I was happy to be working inside and not out in the snowy weather
Also had my own golf cart, which was a nice perk to get around the airport
I still have nightmares about my manager prowling around the restaurant where I used to work.
Worked on a Wyoming dude ranch and a wildfire came roaring through the area. Had to herd the cattle and horses, put all the guests into a caravan of any vehicle we could find and get them into town. We even got the little calf with the broken leg we had been nursing back to health. Went back with the cowboys and hosed the cabins down. We were told if the fire reaches the valley crest to drop everything and run. We’d have about 15 minutes or less. Thankfully it never happened!
Were you Jack or Ennis?
Good experience for partnership.
The only difference is you stand between Karen who hasn’t met her plan in a year while her little gremlins and your little gremlins are wreaking havoc at the buffet, and it’s a $5M project that both of your livelihoods depend on.
Managed one of my parents’ 7-11 franchises, let’s just say consulting stress doesn’t even come close
Imagine during Covid...went to see my mom and saw customers who refused to wear masks and cursed our employees out for asking them to wear a mask

Only ever worked food service (plus the one 10pm-10am dorm night staff job I had). Delivered pizzas and bussed tables in college. I’ll never forget bussing tables for 8 hours, cleaning the restaurant after hours, and taking out trash until 3am. Builds character
Enterprise rent a car. Unless you’re at an airport, almost all business is from car accidents/insurance. If you think people are happy after fighting with the insurance company, the doctors office, missing work and the auto body shop and THEN you give them a blue car instead of a silver car!!?? Watch out!
Used to work at David’s tea but somehow our customers were always the nicest but I can see the struggle

Worked in a 3PL factory picking pieces. Most intense thing ever. 365/24 operation
I worked at a gas station for a few years while I was in college and it made me lose faith in humanity.
They changed the screen prompts on the pumps to a simple Y/N response regarding their loyalty program before you could select your form of payment and people. lost. their. minds.
I watched grown men and women try to beat the shit out of the gas pump because they couldn’t get their card to work and I had to yell over the intercom “Just press No, and then it’ll work.”
Worked in a deli for 10 years throughout school. You would not believe how enraged people can become about their cold cuts or just how much you can be hawked while making a sandwich (it’s not like this isn’t my 5000th sandwich lady). You’re definitely seen as sub-human the second you step behind that counter. Of course there’s also pleasant customers, such as a guy who role-plays Santa year round or the guy who gets bean salad every day

Bet you make a hella good sandwich now tho

Retail and food service are some of the hardest jobs I’ve ever had. But the toughest was being a process server in the Bronx. People do not like to be told they’re being sued or have to appear in court, as if that’s somehow my fault.
But I did have to use disguises every so often, so that was fun.
Worked at one of those japanese hibachi restaurants in the mall
Collecting glasses in a busy pub on a busy Saturday night. Don’t make the mistake of assuming someone has finished their drink. Also never been sexually harassed by middle aged women so much in my entire life. As a 16 year old boy, it was kinda scary but...
Worked at a chocolate shop in high school. Men on Valentine’s Day could be the absolute worst - they’d get super mad we were sold out of the most popular heart boxes and it’s like, dude, it’s 6:30pm on the day of, what do you expect? 🙄
I worked at Wal Mart and it was horrid. Grueling schedule, theyd schedule people and not tell you, schedule you late nights and then need you to come in super early the next am
Wow I’m really impressed by all of these stories. Coming from a country where working while being a student is not very encouraged this is impressive! One good thing I like about America
