I have. Leading up to it, things were great until all of a sudden they weren't, I had become dissociative, distracted, irritable, and generally a mess. I didn't even realize it had gotten to the point it had until I had a supportive boss and team who inquired and encouraged me to take the time I needed.
The process itself was honestly pretty easy. I worked with my VA team to get to the point where we agreed it was the right move. Called the leaves team on company side, and then with STD policy company. Shuttled the appropriate paperwork and that was mostly it from the admin standpoint.
Took the time I needed and hit it hard with all of the various appointments and providers, got a better handle on it and put the spiders back in their cage. Came back after about 3 months, to a job still waiting for me and a team happy to have me back, but who had also ensured that everything ran well in my absence. It helped that I spent a solid week before heading out prepping my coverage and providing a slew of notes for them to reference should anything come up that otherwise only existed in my head, and they absolutely killed it for me and the team.
Been back for a little over a month now, and honestly it's better. I'm able to focus and engage again, and to balance work and the rest of my life a lot more effectively. If you're thinking about doing it, I'd suggest talking to your behavioral health team and getting their take. If they're on board, then talk to your boss if you're comfortable, HR if you're not.
Personally, there were a couple of silver linings that came out of it as a bonus as well. If it's legitimately needed, *take the time*.
Not PTSD, but severe anxiety and depression. I didn’t go on LOA, just worked it out with my boss to take a 5 day weekend. Was huge for me, and probably should have done more.
Have a friend who has been in and out of work for PTSD and associated drug abuse for about 18 months. Located in CA. Still has his job (supply chain management role), but they’re reluctant to bring him back on each time he returns. At least he has a paycheck and some sort of unemployment pay while gone.
Do not forget, military members have specific FMLA rights because of their service. I do not know the full law, not an HR person. Caregivers of military members also have additional FMLA benefits because of caregiving of a veteran. I would check this out under FMLA and PTSD to see what right you have. Good luck.
Recently took a leave of absence from school because of depression and anxiety, unfortunately it was after the withdrawal period and I could not make myself finish the semester so now I have a debt with the school and gi-bill. Getting back into the flow of things again at a different school with shorter classes and hoping it helps. I've been searching for a job since I started my leave of absence and can't find anything the financial struggle is definitely not helping the depression and anxiety.
