I would like to ask for reconsideration on where I work. We have an AWS office in my city but no team members.
Based on your insight into Amazon and AWS, should I say something now? Or take the role and perform well for the next 6 months hoping that when they start to push me to relocate, I can ask to be located here permanently (and travel occasionally to supplement in person meetings)?
This was brought up during interviews and I said I would cross that bridge when I come to it. I honestly did not think I would get the offer. So now i am at the bridge!
Any constructive advice based on insight into the company welcome!
And that’s not changed during covid? Are you guys itching to get back to the office?
I work at AWS, joined from Deloitte in April. For the right roles, they will be flexible. It takes a lot of work and time to find someone they will offer, so they won’t just push you away now. Everyone is remote right now and if you do well during this time, there is no reason to think they would require you to move later. Just talk to your recruiter and be bold, you made it this far!
Thanks for this valuable insight. I know nobody at AWS. So you recommend bringing this up now? I’ll need to wordsmith the ask carefully so it doesn’t come off as an ultimatum.
Pro
I would be upfront about this, saying you’re thrilled for the job but personal circumstances recently changed and you need to stay close to family until your niece’s dad has gone through the cancer journey. If they aren’t OK with it, perhaps if you’re courteous they will let you take a similar role with AWS later on in the future.
I think it depends on the role and your ability to succeed in it long term by being remote. If you can make the business case for why remote is a feasible and successful option then I would say take the job.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but they’ll probably just rescind the offer. Not because they’re heartless but because you knew the job required relocation and, when applying, said you were open to relocating. You could still try to discuss this with the recruiter and see if it’s possible to continue in a remote capacity. Or you could begin the job and bring this up a year later having proven yourself and hope they’ll be willing to work with you. Best of luck.
I agree with you and am thinking #2 in your scenario is the best option. The only silver lining of COVID is many orgs are opening their eyes to the possibility of remote work
Off topic, but curious what AWS roles did you land OP and SM1? Thanks in advance
