MD here and I’ve not been happy with it. I expected more after the being an SD and have not found it to be financially rewarding at all. Granted we have had a few down years but my bonus’s have yet to surpass my last year as an SD/SM. It’s like purgatory between PP and SD. Upside is I don’t have to worry about a mandatory retirement age, just depends on how long I want to spend in purgatory.
MD is a non equity role. An employee like everyone else unless you grind to PP. However once you make 50 it’s not worth becoming a PP due to mandatory retirement at 60 and 10yr vesting in PP pension.
Here are the things that have made my journey as an MD worth working hard to here. You can assess for yourself if they sound like things you want to aspire for. As an MD, you have a greater say in strategic decisions and can shape the direction of projects and teams. Client relationships are great because you build deeper, more strategic relationships with them, and at higher levels. You are constantly pushed to expand your skills and knowledge, and you can be the reason for a significant impact on the growth of junior consultants.
