2-3 YOE in Big 4 audit is a commonly sought after background for forensics so you’re coming up on the sweet spot to make your exit. Anything more than 4-5 YOE will make things difficult as firms will want to see forensics experience for a comparable title.
Get your CPA if you don’t already have it. Add “risk, regulatory, compliance, monitorship, financial crime, corruption, corporate intelligence, AML, sanctions, contract management, asset tracing, recovery, settlements, claims, restructuring, turnaround, valuations, family law, intellectual property, antitrust, disputes, arbitration, investigations, damages, expert witness, or economic consulting” to your search depending on what you’re interested in, and if you’re interested in the tech side “cybersecurity, data analytics, and eDiscovery”
If you’re in the Midwest, Chicago is a hub for forensics work.
Make sure you’re branching out from Big 4 and other accounting firms and looking at consulting firms and other boutiques in your area.

I just applied to an internal open position in forensic in the same firm and had to announce my audit leads I’m applying. You may also want to talk to you PML and see if they can help you get at least a rotation in Forensic. I would go the internal transfer role vs applying to other firms as they will be looking for forensic experience at the senior level.

As others have said - make sure you get your CPA license if you haven’t already! Look for roles in litigation consulting/disputes/expert services as these will give you a wide range of forensic accounting type work. Definitely look outside of public accounting firms! Consulting firms get better forensic work because they aren’t conflicted out.
