You should definitely be able to live comfortably. 20k- 40k in rent and 5-10k on food. Best of luck !
Disagree. You can easily afford to eat out every meal on $230k. Rent should be under $2500 though. Gotta live in Queens as a compromise.
Hey man, consider this. Try NYC out for a bit - use Streeteasy for apartments, or if you’re able to find a roommate or 2 if can help those living expenses. Eating out is totally doable, but keep a budget. Use some savings for a cooking class and really upskill yourself. I know you’re not the best cook, but frozen food options or cooked meals from places like Whole Foods could provide either a cheaper alternative or an average priced / pricy alternative that’s healthy. Really focus on not spending too much on rent. You’ll be outside of the shoebox apartment as much as you can to enjoy the city life. You will however want it to be comfortable enough for a WFH environment if that’s applicable and a quality of life that brings motivation & positivity in your life. Wish you the best and DM if you need any help / Q’s!
You could live in NYC w half of that lol.

I lived in NYC on like 15% of that 10 years ago.
Lol no one is being helpful. Here’s some very rough numbers that might help:
1 BR rent in a nice neighborhood can be ~4k/month. You can get lower by doing a studio, moving further out, or getting roommates.
I also don’t cook - end up spending ~2k a month on food. Again, you can go much lower if you’re partial to pizza, halal carts, etc.
For my dog, I spend around 400 a month in pet insurance, pet rent, etc.
Add in some odds and ends for clothes, Ubers, whatever, you’re at about ~7.5k/month. Call it 90k/year. After tax you should take home ~110k.
Hope that helps
Glad it helped. All numbers are rough, but should give you a sense of major drivers and reference points

Working as a consultant with a dog is a big hassle. Would not recommend.
You make plenty. I lived in nyc at $120k and ate out / takeout every meal (was traveling 2-3 weeks a month M-th) and saved plenty. Rent was $2700. I drank at home, though. But nyc/ Manhattan is about exploring, late nights, and having fun — much more difficult with a dog.

lol the only way you can’t live a comfortable life off that is if your definition of a comfortable life is wildly off base from the average person
Yes, of course. You can easily afford a very nice apartment in a great neighborhood with that salary, and then have money to play around with.
$230k is top 5% income in the vast majority of states. As a single person you can live completely comfortably in Manhattan. Maybe you won’t save a ton but you have the freedom to live a life of total convenience, go out a lot, takes Ubers, order Whole Foods delivery, eat whatever you want and have a comfortable (but not huge or luxurious) apartment in a desirable neighborhood. $400k is where you’re actually feeling like you have everything you want and saving a lot for a single person.

All depends on lifestyle. I make over 400k living in NYC and didn't save a penny last year. Spent it on a fancy watch and at the casino playing poker.
Very nice. Enjoy it
Understand I dont really know NYC prices since I am not from the US and keep hearing how crazy expensive NYC is. I would like to live in Manhattan with a dog (probs alone for when my SO visits), I dont party often but like eating out as Im a lousy cook. 30 M.
Avg one bedroom in Manhattan with a doorman and elevator, in a desirable area and not too far of a walk to the train is roughly 4200/month. 190k after taxes and say doing 6% into 401k and healthcare benefits. Take home is roughly 9k a month. So half of ur base comp will go to rent. Apt shopping will show u what u can really afford and what ur willing to go without. Studio apt would be low 3s with those parameters.

Nyc needs $100k per person to live comfortably. You'll be fine.
You’ll be all right. Enjoy!
