Get that idea out of your head! First, working as a lawyer in emerging markets is complex and challenging. Emphasize how much work you have done-I know it’s hands on, lots of responsibilities given out early if you are good and you get more comprehensive training (vs how siloed we can get in the US). Second you have an LLM from Harvard! Double down on that.
Never ever for a second undermine yourself- too many others are going to do it for you.
Thank you!!
Let someone else tell you that you aren’t qualified. Your job is to do everything within your control to get what you want. Deciding whether you’re good enough to apply is up to you. Deciding whether you will be hired is not.
I wouldn’t expect them to give you full credit for your prior law experience - but I could see them starting you as a second or third year rather than fourth or fifth. But in any case, as others have said, you should go in with full confidence and sell your good experience and then see what happens. Don’t get in your head and undersell yourself.
Sounds like you've got a serious case of imposter syndrome. You need to remind yourself that you are highly qualified and well experienced. Don't let those thoughts of doubt creep in and take hold. You're probably more qualified than half the others you'll be working with.
I was just going to say this. You are highly qualified and they will see that
Jamaican Attorney here, LLM and NY Bar that migrated 5 years ago. I’m not going to sugar coat it. It will be a challenge but it’s not impossible. You will be competing against US JDs (try to leverage as much of your legal experience in your home country) and practice your interview skills. It might take a little bit longer to secure the right job but just be patient and hang in there.
Thank you for this! Did you have to start as a junior or were you able to get credit for previous experience?
