I don't know. Austin is getting increasingly pricy. I wouldn't take a hit if you can help it.
Don't ask for a number, make them give one first.
Don't assume you'll get a paycut
Seriously. Tell them your real number. Austin has the money. Unless your going to a start up. Then you may be doomed to a shitty studio apartment.
You should never take a pay cut just because you're switching cities. Maybe if it was a lower position.
There's no state tax there so it really does equal out . I make the same take home with a higher salary in NYC as I did in Austin
Wait for that offer, unless is a startup. I read a crazy story of a company called Nutrabolt that give an offer to a guy and after he ask for more money the company said: We are choosing someone else to take the position WTF check interview reviews on glassdoor nutrabolt
If you're really worried about getting a "what the hell kind of money did you just ask for" reaction, ask them what they have budgeted for the current position. It's a softer way to make them give you a number, and it usually works to get a more comfortable dialogue going.
Keep your salary. Don't negotiate downward. If you're worth it in NYC you're worth it in Austin.
