Did I just win at negotiating or was I taken for a sucker? I presented a counter-offer and the hiring manager said flat out, “We’re not budging on the base salary.” However, they did offer me a $2,000 sign-on bonus. Should I consider this as a win, or was it dumb of me not to push for a higher base salary? I have over 10 years of experience after all, and I was only offered a $134,000 salary.

I need more information. I need to know if you’re eligible for a yearly performance bonus… And I need to know what your counter offer was. Let’s assume it was something like 150… I would probably have said something like ;

Thank you for the updated offer and for including the $2,000 sign-on bonus. While I understand that the base salary is firm, I’m targeting total compensation closer to $150,000 based on my experience and market benchmarks. Would you be open to discussing adjustments in other areas such as a 10,000 sign on bonus and a salary review based on performance at the six month mark? I’m really excited about the role and would love to find a solution that reflects the value I bring to the team. I’m confident we can come to a mutually beneficial agreement.

Location matters, but you have the job and $2K more, that is a win in this economy.

Is this in the U.S.? 134k base for 10 YOE as SWE sounds low

like

Its not, depending on location. For moderate and lower COL areas, $134K is on the high end.

I have over 17 yrs of experience in my profession and only make $34,000.

like

I wonder if you could transition to being a handy man?

$2k? 😳😮😂

My best is a £50k sign on bonus (spread over 2 years) on base salary of £115k

like

BA2 - Me too but that wasn’t the offer. I was near top of salary band.

smart

You were looking for a base amount that you will see each year... You effectively negotiated a bump for one year. Next year - do not be surprised if raises are modest at best and the way you are bumped is either with again a one time bonus and/or RSUs (that come with a vesting schedule - thus keeping you around in order to cash in). This compensation model is not uncommon these days and can be rewarding. However - when/if you do walk away - you will need to rationalize walking away from any unvested stock.

like

In today's job market, any give, even a sign on bonus is a win. In the future, your best bet is to sit down with HR or ask during your interview/offer where the 134k is in the salary band. If it's at the very top of their range you can expect to not see any raises over the next couple of years. If there is a lot of cap space, you know you have room to negotiate. Also, be sure to negotiate based on your value and experience vs. your bills or cost of living.

I signed on with a PTA position in Skilled nursing offering me my on call rate which was $3. Less than my other 2 positions I have on call.
Tired of working on call for several companies at that time, I accepted being told this was a great rate the company was offering cause they didn't lower the rate from the on call position which usually pays higher.
1 month later they advertise needed positions for therapy team offering a $7500. Dollar sign on bonus over the next year equally to about $500. Extra paid out per month to new hires.
Come to find out one of the new hires who received the sign on bonus, plus a dollar more an hr than my pay rate as a COTA, who has only 2 yrs experience, as apposed to my 30 yrs? Is making out like a bandit compared to me? I am one of the therapist assistants educating this COTA from my years of experience and knowledge, as well as others of course. But non compared to my experience.
I am a little bit more than frustrated how I've ended up with the short end of the stick when I have a very good track record and years of experience.
At this point not sure if I would be better off just moving on? Or trying to renegotiate my wages?

I've heard this song and dance before. If you accept it this way now, I bet your yearly increases will be the same or lower. Unless its going in their pockets these days, they are saving the Company by throwing $1K (adding it to your yearly salary), instead of doing bonuses per quarter, etc., because they lose that way. Its all a money scheme. I like bonuses because I kill it every time. Don't get short changed. Cost of living is only increasing from here out, so you'll be losing $$$. Good Luck.

like

Not sure what area you are in, here In Ohio, that 134k would solve a whole lot of my problems lol

like

134k with 10yrs exp as an engineer on East or West Coast is low. That a net of 100k without quarter bonus if and when you receive them. Midwest, deep woods South maybe it's a good base.

$2,000 is only approximately a $1 raise for one year

How much was the counter? That makes a world of difference. If you came in 5-10 higher then maybe come back 3k the second go. Read their response. If they seemed offended or shocked then said they're not budging but offered the sign on, take it. They tried to provide you something to show good will and you remain open for year end merit/bonus. They may withdraw if you continue to push after your first request or give you some then you receive nothing at years end.

You need to have a lever to get more (competing offer, industry stats for position, etc.)

At least you got a job ..

Companies may be locked or fixed on salaries or just unwilling to budge but you can add other value. Negotiate for 40-60 hours of PTO on the books day 1 and paid medical/dental. The bonus is ok but not really significant againt the salary. I dont know the salary median for your industry but you got a job you wanted and if its a salary you are happy with then I call it a personal win getting the bonus.

That was a low sign-on bonus. Normally for a Software Engineer the sign on would be at least $3k. But the way our economy is going should take it into consideration

This seems like a score. I would get a clause saying you get an automatic annual adjustment for inflation.

You didn't say if you accepted or not.
If you did, you won, anyway, with the sign-on bonus.

Merely all an opinion here, but in the famous song lyrics of Kenny Rogers:
"You got to know when to hold up, know when to fold up...know when to walk away, know when to run...
"Only offered a $134K" with 10 years in isn't 'chump change', and managers don't have as much flexibility with HR on $$ issues as some may think.

considering i've been unemployed and actively seeking a job for almost a year, your "only 134k" is fairly disgusting.. be happy you have a job

I was offered less than what I made 7 years ago to teach a class. Everything has increased since then. Wages should too.

In X company I worked for 26months but my pf account is there for last 13months, before that my salary was very low so sometimes I got salary in hand or in pay cheque. I do have salary account statement for most of the months except 3-4 months in between my tenure. Will I face any issue for this?
Note: I do have good relationship with X company.
Please give your valuable suggestions.
