Lol yes

I once wrote a memo that was terrible for a party that interests aligned with ours. I sent the the analysis to that side. At trial, the opposing counsel HATED me and I just had to bare the embarrassment. I laugh (and still cringe) now 😂. It was a rookie mistake. You will live.

Have you ever received an email from a client that seemed outrageously long? I was curious how much time they spent on this email so I threw it into Google Docs to discover this email is 27 pages and 3,500 words long...I mean kudos to you dude, but I’m still not responding until tomorrow 😇

I have a brand new person on my team- she is totally new to the field, has recently returned to the workforce (solo mom of 3 teens), is very smart. I knew when I hired her that I’d have to lean in to get her to where she needed to be. She has a ton of potential but lacks experience in a professional setting. I need to help her level up her written communication skills. Any suggestions on books, resources, strategies? She is learning by doing and takes feedback but I want more supports for her.

Would you feel comfortable telling HR that your service line’s culture sucks and name the individuals who cause it? Or is a better approach saying it’s the leadership in general creating a negative and toxic culture? How effective are these conversations really? Trying to assess if there’s any point in bringing this up. Obviously HR works for the company and an employee sharing their thoughts on the unsupportive, cold leaders could bite me in the long run.

A senior partner wrote off a significant amount of my time - due to his write-offs as well as those of another partner, approximately 40% of my 2021 billable hours have been erased. As a result, I will most likely not be eligible for a bonus in 2022. Do I address this with the managing partner of my office? With the partner who wrote off most of my time? Or do I stay silent to preserve what is, on the surface, a good working relationship, as this person could one day serve as a reference for me?

I recently started a job this past November as a Clinical Informatics Supervisor at a fairly large healthcare organization. The women working under me at the healthcare organization are twice my age. I can honestly say from day one I felt excluded. I experienced multiple occasions of insubordination and quite honestly, bullying. Now I’m being pushed out of my position, not fired. Now they have me sitting and doing nothing all day. I don’t know what to do.

Anybody work on a small team where you are the only diverse member? I have always worked in places where by chance the group was diverse. I just started this job and didn’t think this would bother me because everyone seemed nice. But frankly don’t understand the jokes or the stuff they want to talk about. Feeling kind of out of place and finding myself just smiling and nodding a lot in these zoom meets.

It’s funny - I’ve been rejected so many times in my short career. But when it happens, I still feel a small sting. Just got dinged from an interesting role - how do you deal with the aftermath?

Partner: does not copy me on any emails
Partner: does not save anything to client folder and has secretary do it for him
Partner: does not send anyone a heads up when something important happens despite knowing that no one else could possibly know what’s going on in his case
Partner to me (at full volume): WHY DON’T YOU KNOW THIS IMPORTANT THING THAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT IN THIS CASE DO I REALLY NEED TO TELL YOU EVERYTHING [proceeds to carry on with a boomer-esque rant about “kids these days”]

Highest paying companies for CRM development?

Recently had my first real performance review (had none in big law!): Boss (GC) said I’m efficient, have good legal and discretional skills, I deal well with people and have a good business acumen. He said, however, that I should be careful to sometimes not talk too much during meetings but rather listen more, and that I should come a little earlier into the office and try to be on time for meetings (I am often 2-3-4 minutes late).

Is this common, or are such reviews usually only positive?

Additional Posts in Millennials in Law

Okay. Possibly a stupid question BUT Imma ask anyway.

Can someone just explain how you plan out how much to bill so you can make sure it’s not a mad scramble at the end of year? I’m moving from a firm where I was lacking in any kind of mentorship. No one ever just sat down and explained the most efficient way to track/measure your hours to confirm that you are on track.

Is there just a secret excel spreadsheet that all lawyers have and I just missed the memo???

HELP.

I see so much room for growth in my firm, especially related to social media, updated technology, marketing strategies, etc. Except, every time I suggest them, I'm pegged as a greedy/pushy millennial. I referenced other firms initiatives and was told it was clear I was not happy where I am, so I should go... Anyone else struggling with this?

Mentioning the programs is greatly appreciated.
