Do you ever feel like your friends in law firms look down on you as an in-house counsel? I am the only one in my group of friends who started in-house right away and I absolutely love it, but feel that some of my law school friends get weird about the topic

They probably want to be you, but are afraid to leave their firms. I certainly do.

I want to be OP but I am not all afraid. I’m actually pretty desperate to make the switch. I guess I’m afraid of a bad fit as in-house is a lot more idiosyncratic than biglaw.

If your friends look down on you for being in house counsel, they must also think business grows on trees.

I’ll be your friend. I look very favorably on in-house counsel.

I’ve heard this before, but I really don’t get the thinking behind the prestige downgrade.

To me, a good in-house gig seems like one of the better possible career outcomes.

I’ve been doing this since before the turn of the millennium, and none of my firm peers feel any degree of job satisfaction at all. They only keep doing it because the money is hard to find in-house because quality in-house gigs are a lot harder to come by than getting a good firm position.

Not to denigrate certain on-house positions, but I do think compliance and contract management roles are viewed to be less prestigious; but generally speaking, I felt no loss in prestige going in-house. In fact, lots of lawyers all of a sudden seemed much more interested in what I was doing (and, of course, where I was going to send my work!).

I think it really comes down to $$. However, I maintain that if friends believe your worth is tied to your net worth, you need a better caliber of friends.

like

If that's true, you need new friends

like

I feel like sometimes they think I don’t work as hard or have stress anymore (which is not accurate). I find it’s people outside of the legal profession who think my job isn’t “prestigious” anymore.

like

Give it time. If you’re an associate, assuming your friends are the same level, they probably haven’t yet reached the level of burnout with their law firm jobs that taking a pay cut and having better quality of life looks really good. They’re still enamored with the prestige, etc, but we all know that fades over time. They’ll get there.

I think my firm friends are jealous that I went in-house and I’m jealous that I’d be making so much cash had I stayed (multiple COVID bonuses, regular bonus, etc.)

Jealous

I’ve never felt this. I do get a lot of jealous comments. :)

I’m not normally one to say “they’re just jealous,” but they probably are in this case

Any tips for hard launching partners on social media? For context, I’ve (Indian American female) been dating my white American boyfriend for 3 years and we just got engaged after two years of convincing my parents. They are very happy and excited now, but I’m scared shitless about being ostracized / judged by my extended family and Indian community in the US once I “let the cat out of the bag” on the engagement news. I want to be proud and confident about this but could use some moral support.

My partner of 5 years ended our relationship last night. I’m shattered and feel absolutely sick, and I know the healing isn’t going to be easy. We were on the verge of an engagement and I was ready to spend the rest of my life with him.

I don’t know how to approach work during this time. I think I can get by, but I’m definitely not 100%. Should I talk to my boss about it? My team is close-knit and comfortable around each other, but I don’t know if it’s “appropriate.” What would you do?

People who are cleanliness/organization freaks and have SOs who are not as clean/organized, how do you deal with it? Just learn to live with it?

SO moved in, however they aren’t as organized (an example is closet, my clothes are neatly folded and kept while theirs are mostly a pile of rolled up clothes). It does upset me and for some reason comes across as lazy which it may or may not be. We have had one minor chat and they saw it as ‘house rules’ and were worried there may be too many rules.

sigh* last week Saturday my s/o & I broke up after our 3 year relationship. & it really been affecting me negatively — not eating, autopilot mode, self isolation & diving deep into work. Today I decided to go outside, where I picked up some food to go and went to an outdoor movie by myself; where I had the realization I just really enjoy being by myself. Idk, maybe I’m just better off single after so many failed relationships/am I being dramatic? but anyone else has given up on love?

Do you think you and your significant other should have similar personalities? My significant other and I are doing long distance and I feel like when I FaceTime with him, I emote more and show interest by asking more questions but from his end, he doesn’t always have a reaction or just nods, and it makes me feel like he’s uninterested. On his end he sees it as he’s comfortable.

Well, I was the one who broke it off. I couldn’t get him to love me the way I needed or even respect me enough. It’s been 6 weeks of not seeing each other. We messaged this week. He doesn’t get it…. His messages show he still doesn’t know what he wants. Yet, if I am totally honest, I hate how part of me wishes he would do a grand gesture/finally decide to be a better man. It’s delusional. It’s crazy how love can be so rosy, sweet & blinding that the red flags seem surmountable.

Got a temp offer for less than a year without promise of turning into full-time. Wanted to know what ppl think about temp jobs (looks bad on resume if I don't turn full-time later within the company?) and what comp should look like (e.g. 1.2× of regular comp?).

Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.

Can anyone help me wrap my head around this post Series C start-up equity offer? It’s an IP director position, the the base is $170 with 10% bonus (both lower than I was expecting). There’s also an equity component: 0.15% of current fully diluted equity. This equates to about 30000 shares at a strike price of $2. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.
