No. Quality over quantity. If you make the time you spend valuable, the kids will have fond memories.
My Dad worked his ass off and we only really saw him on weekends because he left before we got up and came home after our (early) bedtime. But that’s the way it was and we had all of his attention on weekends. As long as everyone knows what it is, it becomes your family routine.
This is SO spot on!
This is the second time you’ve tried to make this point. I have to assume you don’t have a family. I couldn’t disagree more. Perhaps there are people so monumentally insecure that they do it for their ego, but I haven’t met them yet. It’s too crappy a job to do for any other reason
P1 nailed it. I would also add that you are working so hard to give your family opportunities and options many less fortunate folks don’t have.
This is a nice excuse that everyone has to test for themselves. Do you do this for your family or for yourself?
1. This is individual. You are not your buddy.
2. Logistically if you are gone the whole week and only home on weekends, no quality time spent on weekends will replace the time lost during the week. you don’t live at home you are just visiting. You are also human and you need to relax over the weekend as well. Then there is golfing :)
3. Many partners (I only know big 4 partners) delude themselves that they do it to provide for their family, while in reality it is about them (ego trip etc). Some know it some don’t.
4. Ask your family what they think?
It becomes an issue if you then spend your weekend not being a part of the family. In this field it’s tough to work really long hours, be present with family and have your own hobbies that are separate. You get to pick 2.
Let’s be honest, this job isn’t so important that it should be prioritized over family. The best partners I’ve seen prioritize family first and balance client demands. Majority of them are great at leveraging those around them and work in large accounts / ecosystems.
