Additional Posts in Lawyers with ADHD
Everything always takes me so long to do :/
I’m not sure how this will impact this bowl, but it is worth pointing out the need to assess whether there should be concern for those in this bowl. While we all understand ADHD is something attorneys are completely capable of managing with legal positions, not everyone in the field agrees with that. https://joinfishbowl.com/post_va66ztgmkw

Did you practice your arguments aloud? Did you practice with someone interjecting? Did you practice with someone sympathetic to your argument and someone antagonistic?
Did you move beyond the simple legal arguments to the underlying practical realities of how it makes the litigation simpler or easier to resolve or more expensive?
The presentation is separate from the issues. Just observe court hearings and motion practice.
If you’re not naturally a people person, you need to think about what your audience thinks and cares about. Your presentation needs to align their concerns with yours.
Being persuasive you cannot prepare a full script for that in advance. Instead you need to learn to be flexible and improv. It’s like fencing- for every move they make there is an appropriate counter or 2 you can deploy.
Additionally, you need to develop phrases you can whip out to buy yourself some time while you think of a response.
Court appearances (and any public speaking) have some minor level of theatrics to them. Watch some motion hearings or just regular calendars and watch what the older attorneys do
Oral arguments are hard tbh. The judges are not concerned with just the legal issues. They care about moving cases along, conserving time, not having parties run to the Court for every little thing, splitting the baby, and giving parties a second chance before penalizing, etc. On the other side, even if your opponent has no legal leg to stand on, they’ll make a play asking for further time to comply/do something or otherwise have the Court not do anything drastic at this time to allow the parties to resolve things through the litigation/mediation process, or otherwise in interests of equity, etc. It’s like having a parent hearing your grievance who doesn’t want to discipline your sibling because even if it’s warranted it sets a bad precedent. That’s not even factoring that judges can be complete and utter morons
It’s not idealllll and I always sneakily take it out before I speak but I’m the same way and have found that chewing gum helps calm me down right before I’m up
I do that too! And I like to have a glass of water handy
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I take my medication to prep but not on gameday. My medicine makes me anxious and I find the endorphins/adrenaline of the hearing/depo whatever is enough to keep me focused. Another option is beta blockers for anxiety. You can take them as-needed and they reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety.
Ask your doctor about an extended release version if there is one. Typically the side effects like dry mouth are less noticeable with extended release versions.
