Does anyone here learn best through repetitious exercises? I always used repetition and practice to solidify knowledge in college and while studying for the CPA exam, but I can’t find a way to make that work since I’ve started working full time. As a result, my technical knowledge is not up to par. I think it’s mainly because the learning format is listening to a very long presentation or lecture, but then there isn’t any follow up or practice, so I just end up forgetting what I learned. Cont.

Not to mention, the long lecture format doesn’t work well for me as I have a short attention span. Just wondering if anyone else has a similar learning style or has found other ways to retain knowledge.

I don’t mean to be a Debbie downer, but if repitition was all it took, our jobs would be non exempt earning overtime. I really think we need to do more advanced computations and analytical thinking, and in my personal experience each and every situation is different with a different fact pattern. I think we should focus more on developing a methodology or way of thinking such that we teach ourselves how to arrive at an answer. I’d like to think in a carpenter analogy that we’re building custom libraries, not hammers treating everything like it’s a nail.

In terms of strategies I would use or still use, I ask myself 1) what needs to get done, 2) what information do I need to complete the task at hand, 3) do I have the necessary information, 4) once I’ve proofed the output, what approvals / reviews / buy in do I need from my end of the client’s end?

Your exposure to multiple engagements is going to give you the chance to practice out everything you learned in the classroom. I’ve experienced almost everything corporate or partnership tax related in the real world, except it gets removed easily from the concepts with all the BS of client engagements. In college courses you get hyper focus on a handful of concepts and applications of that concept. But unless you’re NTO, it’s unlikely you’ll be using that scholarly approach very often.

However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.
