I stopped watching the news. Everywhere is dangerous if you look at the news that show crime.
Ive lived in many cities across U.S. local news channels always have the same focus and seems its all doom and gloom, its just part of reality and also partly hyper fixation. All news channels have same template btw, whole lot of rough stuff with some feel good non-sense to cap off.
Just go about your life and live well
I agree with this. I don't even watch the news anymore because it just make me sad.
I totally feel you. I stepped back from the news years ago for my own mental health. Just keep in mind that we live in a major city and the worst tragic events will always be highlighted and it's like that basically in every other major city you can think of. Don't overthink it too much.
I work with news media and my advice is to ignore the headlines and go enjoy your life. Media covers what gets the most clicks (aka headlines about violence, crime, economic failure, social justice issues, etc… “if it bleeds, it leads” is the common practice) so they can claim higher readership/web traffic and sell ad space for more money. There’s a little more to it than this, but that’s how news publications function in a nutshell and this includes newspapers, news websites, tv news channels, talk radio, etc. There are very few exceptions and even those are still biased in one way or another. Media is a money-and-power-hungry machine that does not usually have readers’ best interest at heart (will pause here to say that individual journalists/reporters are not usually to blame; it’s the higher ups and the institution as a whole).
Also, staying up with the latest news does become addictive for some people, similar to social media addiction, and this is something to be aware of. My advice is to unsubscribe from news emails, avoid conversations with people who like to complain or gossip, reduce time on social media, and foster habits that aren’t media-centric: hiking, creative hobbies, cooking, explore new music, hang out with your pets, etc.
Also look up the term “Scary World Syndrome” which has to do with a psychological tendency to believe that what lies beyond our comfort zone is dangerous (which is not true). Awareness of this thought pattern is a good place to start in reducing our fear/sadness about the world, as is stepping outside of our comfort zone from time to time which could be as simple as having a friendly chat with a stranger in the grocery store line or whatever else feels right for you.
