First year over thinking everything. What's a good subject line when emailing a partner asking for work

Do you need help?

Just whatever you do don’t use a phrase that communicates you have nothing to do. Use phrases that express that your workload just lightened. You don’t want to get buried and also don’t want to look like dead weight.

Don't send the email. Why do you want something to do?

likefunnysmart

Not everyone earns biglaw salaries for more than a few years. The money faucet turns off for most people eventually. If you know you're out the door in two or three years for another gig it makes sense to pinch pennies (even a mere 2,000,000 pennies)

Availability

like

^ that, keep communications short and to the point

like

My rule of thumb is never ever ask for more work. But if you succumb to the guilt, something like “availability for work” or “workload capacity”

likesmarthelpful

Need help with any matters?

When you become a lazy midlevel, you can just use that subject line and not bother with a message, partner-style.

likefunny

"Check-in re. Work" is what I use. That way they can see the subject and who it is from and ignore it and let me go back to being a subpar and overpaid associate

Wow. Reeeeeelax. It’ll be ok.

Try “work needed.”

Working at a boutique transactiona firm. First year did not receive much guidance and made a few errors, one of which could have been a deal but ended up being fine but overall I worked hard, billed hours above target and showed a willingness to learn. Three main partners in the group. I feel like I may have been written off by the one partner, still get a fair amount of work from another and the third has never really given work but has a rep for doing things alone or using seniors. Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??

⚠️Toxicity Alert ⚠️

My previous manager would track us by hours daily, made a fuss everytime anything stretched and guilt us for that and the unplanned leave too unless it was COVID. Hinted him a lot of time, this is problematic but apparently he considered it "standard practice for agile".

Now 8/10 teammates have switched within < 1 year of project start (6-7 months with him) which tbh had good work in our opinion and even team was fun to work with even though none of us ever met in person.

When you email the partner with a question on one of your cases and he responds “okay thanks” lol

Hi all, I'm 25F moving from a tropical country to London. On the hunt for work outfits that'll fit into the City. What are typical brands you'd recommend?

This is twice now in back to back weeks my boss has asked me where the disconnect was in our communications because I didn’t deliver on what “was asked”, even though I know damn well what was asked and what was done were the same thing. I’m not sure if he’s changing the meaning or isn’t communicating what he’s envisioning or what but it’s embarrassing to be called out like that, and to have people think you’re the dumb 23 year old.

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. First time posting here! I have been tasked with creating a military leave differential pay policy and was curious if anyone would be willing to provide any resources. Thanks!

What do you hate about BigLaw?
I actually love it. I was a paralegal in BL during law school. Maybe I am use to the environment? What am I missing? Help me remove the rose colored glasses. The cases are interesting, pay is fantastic, offices are beautiful, and the research resources are a big reason why I never want to leave. Sure there are partners/senior associates that don’t respect you or your time. That happens everywhere and would mean you need to move firms or sections. What am I missing?

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? As a mid-senior level associate in litigation/investigations/arbitration, do you feel like what you’re currently doing is actually holding you back in terms of professional/personal development? We spend so much time going over the nittiest and grittiest of details that I feel like I’m not actually learning anything new anymore or expanding my skill set.
