First year over thinking everything. What's a good subject line when emailing a partner asking for work

Working at a boutique transactiona firm. First year did not receive much guidance and made a few errors, one of which could have been a deal but ended up being fine but overall I worked hard, billed hours above target and showed a willingness to learn. Three main partners in the group. I feel like I may have been written off by the one partner, still get a fair amount of work from another and the third has never really given work but has a rep for doing things alone or using seniors. My previous manager would track us by hours daily, made a fuss everytime anything stretched and guilt us for that and the unplanned leave too unless it was COVID. Hinted him a lot of time, this is problematic but apparently he considered it "standard practice for agile".

Now 8/10 teammates have switched within < 1 year of project start (6-7 months with him) which tbh had good work in our opinion and even team was fun to work with even though none of us ever met in person.

This is twice now in back to back weeks my boss has asked me where the disconnect was in our communications because I didn’t deliver on what “was asked”, even though I know damn well what was asked and what was done were the same thing. I’m not sure if he’s changing the meaning or isn’t communicating what he’s envisioning or what but it’s embarrassing to be called out like that, and to have people think you’re the dumb 23 year old.

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.

My coworker brought a puppy to work, who bit my hand. I ended up losing my temper and yelling at them. Now everyone is mad at me for blowing up at work, even though this is something I shouldn't have had to deal with in the first place!

Any thoughts on how do we deal with an incompetent boss who you dont look up to and have no trust that you would ever get credit for the work you would do for him/her? Given that changing the boss is not an option.

What do you hate about BigLaw?
I actually love it. I was a paralegal in BL during law school. Maybe I am use to the environment? What am I missing? Help me remove the rose colored glasses. The cases are interesting, pay is fantastic, offices are beautiful, and the research resources are a big reason why I never want to leave. Sure there are partners/senior associates that don’t respect you or your time. That happens everywhere and would mean you need to move firms or sections. What am I missing?

Wondering if anyone has a good example of a brand that originally sold a commodity/mass food and successfully introduced a premium/luxury line, under the same brand name. Kicker is the brand has to have started as mass then gone upmarket, nor vice versa.

One condition states that he must remain in good standing with the company even after the 3 year vesting period to receive distributions. Is that atypical?

Does anyone else feel that calling some minority SA hires “diversity fellows” and the like is somewhat of a dog whistle? If top firms were really committed to DEI, wouldn’t they just hire more unrepresented SAs rather than making them advertise that they were hired as a part of some woke initiative?

When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

Corporate associates — do you feel it’s harder to meet hours vs your litigation counterparts? Billing in increments of 0.10 vs driving to the courthouse that can be billed in large chunks, as an example (pre-covid obvi)

Mid-level when she's leading the call: please make sure you take notes. It's expected of the person not leading a call (note I always take notes)

Me(jr): asked to lead a call for a different deal as training. Mid-level doesn't take notes (also on call) and tells me it's the job if the junior to take notes.

Random partner asked a litigation-related question to a partner I frequently work with (i’m a transactional associate). My partner cc’d me and said for me to briefly look. Asked the library. They got me a great case. Sent it back. Now the random partner is asking for more cases in another circuit.

I haven’t done caselaw research since 1L and this isn’t even my practice… wtf do I do (I am fully utilized in my normal work and have a few deals closing soon…)
