First year over thinking everything. What's a good subject line when emailing a partner asking for work

Looking for additional projects to help with.

Do you need help?

Just whatever you do don’t use a phrase that communicates you have nothing to do. Use phrases that express that your workload just lightened. You don’t want to get buried and also don’t want to look like dead weight.

Don't send the email. Why do you want something to do?

Not everyone earns biglaw salaries for more than a few years. The money faucet turns off for most people eventually. If you know you're out the door in two or three years for another gig it makes sense to pinch pennies (even a mere 2,000,000 pennies)

Better to stop by and tell the partner in person.

Probably true. But I really prefer ppl contact me through email because I’m antisocial. Some partners must be too.

“Looking for work” or “looking for new projects” or “looking for additional projects” imo. No need to hide the ball, people are busy.

I’d also try and be specific like are you blank slate because everything closed and looking for a new deal(s)? Are you at 30 hours/week and looking for a couple of small projects to get your hours up but you can’t join a new matter? Are you asking for today? This week? Next week? That way you are less likely to get slammed with 40 hours of work when you only wanted 5.

Also maybe depends on your firm but I would find some nice seniors and ask them instead or in addition. A lot of partners are hopeless at answering email and they aren’t dealing with first year tasks anyway so they sometimes have no idea what their matters need especially short term.

like

I had to ask for work often after coming back from a parental leave to rebuild a docket, and my income depended on my billing, so I get the need to ask for work.
“Looking for work” is what I often used, or even just a quick zoom message “hey, I am trying to ramp up my hours, and don’t have enough to keep me busy. Do you have anything you could pass to me?”

like

Do some CLEs first before asking for new work if your current matters are at a lull.

like

“Staffing”

“Open for business”?

I would use something like “checking in for new projects”

Out for drinks. Out of pocket for next couple hours

Hi there!!

🥰🥰
I just want to say that I'm queer and married, in a Cis-hetero passing relationship 🤭

Do we have to talk about dating like all the time?

Can't we talk about other stuff? Like promoting THE AGENDA (jk)

No, but FR let's talk about being open and accepted in the workplace? How did you do that? How (un) friendly is the work environment?

Thankyaaaaaaaalll 😘😘😘

Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??

My old employer asked me if I wanted to come back to the company as a manager. The pay will likely be much better and the position holds more responsibility than I’ve had before, so overall it would be a step up. The issue is I left the company because of an abusive manager who constantly put me down and made me feel like I wasn’t doing anything right. If I come back I’d be working under her again. I’m torn because the opportunity is great but the stress was awful. Continued in comments…
