For people that were let go from one job due to a bad culture fit or management problems, how do you answer that in interviews without seeming like you’re blaming anyone?

Talk about what you want now, not what you didn’t have at your previous job. “Im really proud of specific accomplishments at old job but I’m really excited about joining an organization with x qualities”

like

Less is more. Acknowledge that it wasn’t ideal, then move on to the next topic. You’ll seem a lot more mature if you own it but don’t turn it into a chance to vent. As they say, it doesn’t do well to dwell.

I was “part of a round of layoffs”

like

Honestly I see no issues in lying about something like this. I assume the interviewer is going to lie to me about stuff, too.

funny

Just tell them you were at Havas. That should take care of it.

funnylike

Talk about it honestly, with radical candor, and give them the cell phone number of someone who witnessed it.

Just let the sun shine in on all of it. The crime is always in the cover up.

I failed in a massive way by underestimating a bully. I thought I could work around it, but in the end their toxicity was too much. So I resigned. I freelanced for a while and never really had to talk about it.

But then I got the dream job call. The one where you’re like, I really want this job. And I knew my resignation was going to be the elephant in the room.

So I hit it straight on. With total transparency and honesty. And gave them the cell number of the CEO.

I got the job and asked my hiring manager a few weeks after I started if what I said matched watch they said. Of course it did. Because all I did was tell the truth.

likeuplifting

The CEO was put in an impossible situation and tried their best to mediate.

The bully was a department head that, at the time, drove most of our business growth. The moral high ground I had was a mere foothill compared to the financial viability peak this person occupied.

Since my departure, many others have left too because of the cultural toxicity.

The bully is now a partner.

Lesson learned: Money talks. When it comes down to employing most of your team with a known entity bringing in cash and a new entity who isn’t just yet, it’s an obvious choice.

I actually remember saying to the CEO, “I didn’t ask for this fight and we both know who’s going to lose.”

If you don’t see a path to success, and after conversations with your manager they can’t map one out beyond “I think we can....” just leave. Leave right then. Staying will delay the inevitable and just inflict more trauma on yourself and your team, via collateral damage.

Your self worth is not something someone else is allowed to define. That’s yours. It will always be yours. And it will always have value if you let it.

Keep succinct, avoid badmouthing the last job even if your interviewer tries to pull it out of you. The goal for them is identifying if your skills and personality fit their needs. So speak to things that benefit your cause, not hurt it.

It doesn't mean blatantly lie about your situation, just simply say it wasn't a fit and you're looking for X in this new role.

like

Just say it was a Covid related layoff.

like

Share most of all what you learned from the situation, and how that experience made you better or helps you know how to navigate that situation better now. Show how that experience adds value to what you offer!

like

The agency lied to all of us about being laid off because of COVID, so why not!

like

Explain the culture and why you didn't fit. Spin, but be mostly honest. Some places will laugh at the culture, with the interviewer saying "yeah, I've worked in that environment." That's good. Some places see red flags, because they have a similar environmental. That's also good, because you don't want to be there.

We've all quit jobs, or been let go, or bad struggles, for things either outside our control, for bad management, or cultural misalignment. We get it.

Yeahh I’m keeping it covid related. I got let go in April

I got let go when COVID struck and just fibbed. But I also like to express what I am looking for in my next employer and that my last one wasn’t a good fit. For example, I express a need for some work life balance. Even though the ad industry is rough, working more than three 14 hour days a week just isn’t for me.

This is a question about friendships. Two friends got into a really bad fight this past weekend. They have each asked me to hang out this weekend. What do I do? I don’t want to have to choose sides. One is a friend I’ve known a little longer and has been a good friend and so she would feel betrayed and angry if she knew I were still friends with her now-enemy. The other I’ve known less longer, but we seem more compatible. Advice??
