I left ID in February of this year. The majority of my experience consisted of ID since 2019. I switched to tax and it was the best decision I ever made.
This particular firm was looking for a litigator with substantive experience in the court room, depositions, etc. I highlighted all the litigation experience I got from ID and did a lot of research on the particular tax practice before the interviews. I emphasized how I had a very strong work ethic, very reachable and was willing to learn a new subject that I wanted to make a career out of. To answer your question - no I had zero tax experience. As of matter of fact, I avoided all tax classes in law school. The firm wanted a litigator that they could teach tax law to. The tax practice I’m in doesn’t require an expertise in tax law either to be honest.
