I applied for a HRBP role at a Fortune 100 with 4 years of consulting experience and was told that the role requires "actual HR experience". Was offered a project manager role in the end 🤷
Ah, the fabled “BaU”.
I wouldn't hire a consultant into that role, ever. Not the right type of experience or operational accountability as a precursor. Why do you want that role?
Would look for specialized roles within an HR function in a CoE such as compensation. Or if you are an HCM system expert there would be plenty of jobs in enterprise software companies or internal IT or HR.
I’d put you at an L3 HRBP.
That’s usually the minimum HRBP level. Senior HRBP would be a stretch for you, since you likely have not had the experience of the true breadth of the HRBP role (full cycle employee experience, employee relations, etc.)
Gotcha thank you. Do you think the learning curve is high to make the switch?
It depends on what type of past experience you’ve had, the organization, its HR department, and the role itself. You would definitely have a learning curve but if there’s a good support system in place (ie a robust team of seasoned HRBPs you can lean on for support and education) it’s doable. If this is a smaller org or one that’s just ramping up its HRBP function, that would be much steeper of a curve.
