Has anyone taken FMLA leave and know what the process is? I have been depressed for 2 months now and a barely making it. Hours are low, I’m late on deadlines, making mistakes. It’s not like me; I’m usually extremely on top of everything and very ambitious. I can feel that I’m depressed but I just don’t even know where to start to get better. Any tips on the depression front are also appreciated

You sound like me a few years ago. I asked HR for the FMLA paperwork and had my therapist fill it out. You will need a medical provider to fill out the paperwork, but it doesn’t need to be a therapist if your PCP is willing to do it.

Make sure you’re eligible for FMLA as well (based on your tenure with the firm, # of employees). The employee handbook should describe procedures and who is the FMLA POC.

I don’t know if I have any depression-related tips, it will depend on what you and your provider think is best. But taking time off seriously helped me straighten things out. I wish more people would take advantage of FMLA!

Thank you so much for this

Yes. You only need to tell your firm it’s for a “medical condition.” If they ask for impairments, you can say “cognitive issues and sleep difficulties” or something else generic. The PCP signing any paperwork is advisable because it doesn’t reveal the nature of your illness.

Also get checked for physical issues like sleep apnea and autoimmune issues. Several issues may be happening at the same time.

You may need to re-visit your therapy. If you are getting worse, it may be time for a different provider and approach.

Take leave sooner rather than later. I fell into a pretty bad funk as a relative declined with terminal illness, which was hard by itself but also resurfaced depressive tendencies, and things at work would have been smoother if I had taken leave sooner.

Your benefits department will be able to tell you the FMLA application process. Don't tell them more than you need to - it's none of their business.

For depression (my experience, anyway) - prioritizing sleep first, followed by exercise, helps the most.

Also behavioral activation. Depression is perverse because it makes you want to stop going about life, but going on with life is often the best thing to keep your mood up. Find something - anything, as long as it's not obviously just to numb out feeling - that you can do, and do it. I started with making the bed when I woke up, then added some self-care things, then regular plans with friends, even if I felt crummy. It made a big difference.

This will get better.

This is so helpful. Thank you for sharing. I’m glad you’re feeling better.

I will also tell you that if you decide to go on an antidepressant, being on leave for a few weeks while your body adjusts will be hugely beneficial because you will be very tired at first!

One of the things that my ADD coach helped me with was realizing that I wasn’t prioritizing activities that help me feel recharged. Between work and home responsibilities, I was just burnt out and overwhelmed.

So now when I start to get burned out I focus on reducing auditory overwhelm, getting outside, listen to music, get comfortable, read a fun book, etc.
