Would it be doable in MN? Baby is coming in Nov, so fiancee is going to be out of work for only six months or so. We're trying to be as smart as possible moneywise, of course.
Thank you for making an honest woman out of your then girlfriend.
If it's Nebraska
Yes. Median income in most of the Midwest is 40-50s.
Where Midwest? KC and Chicago is very different. Mid 90k for 3 is possible but not luxurious in Chicago. Depends on what you mean with comfortably. If you need daycare it might be tight.
That salary is doable for short-term in MN and the benefits here are many. Agree with ACD 1 to a degree. MSP metro housing market is hot right now and taxes are on the high side so two incomes may be more comfortable in long run. But, great healthcare here, decent transportation options, good schools, lots of jobs (agency and in-house), amazing quality of life with outdoor getaways nearby and cultural events in the cities ... I'm a coastal transplant and love it here. If you make the move, find a way to get networked with other transplants quickly because it can admittedly be harder to break into friend groups of lifelong Minnesotans. The plus side of that is: Once you are in, you're in. Most people don't even know how to backstab. Generally pleasant and hard-working, family-focused crowd.
Thanks guys for the feedback! Think I'll go for it. NY Will always be there. It's an opp to work on the brand side, so that seems like a plus.
Yep, that’s a comfy existence in much of the Midwest but tough in Chicago.
You'll be fine. Cost of living here is pretty reasonable!
What I want to know is how are you supporting a 3 person family with a salary under 90 in NYC, lol?
90 for 3 in MN can work but you'll still need to be smart and probably make some standard-lowering choices. It's not as cheap as some might think. Housing market is insanely competitive. If you plan on a house, get ready to look for months, go to battle people who have lots of cash and to make offers well above asking. Income tax is stupid high. And IMO, groceries are some of the most expensive i've seen in the midwest (including chicago) if you compare quality. There are cheaper opts like costco tho, which you can't find in bigger cities.
Use to work in Minneapolis years ago. Really like that city. Aren't the taxes stupid high. I seem to remember that being the case.
MSP is great family town, not exciting as other places for single folk, imo. 90k is doable but a *little* low. If you don't have a lot of existing school debt or car loans/other debt, it's more doable. And great culturally for Midwest
We're both working right now. Baby is due soon and ingot the offer recently.
90k in Nebraska ? Sounds pretty sweet. Search real estate and rental prices. You'll have your answer.
