This should usually just be covered by anti-bullying and harassment policies that talk about non-discrimination for any reason including appearance.
Yeah if they have a culture where they're not enforcing their own policies in some facet that's a much broader issue they're going to have to contend with (not to mention the risk of labor lawsuits...)
I’m not sure a specific policy could really do much to stop microaggressions against fat people since fatphobia is so ingrained in modern society. I regularly hear anti-fat comments amongst people who generally are up on DEI topics, and when I’ve pointed them out, folks haven’t been receptive. It’s definitely exhausting hearing whole conversations between colleagues about how hard they’re working to look less like me.
Thank you. The good news is that it’s gotten better. The bad news is that I don’t know whether it’s gotten better because we fired the exec who was the worst offender (thank god), or because I’ve visibly lost weight. So I have no idea if the problem is really gone.
I feel like putting a policy in place specifically for this would open the door you don’t want opened
Interesting, I don't think we've considered it but I don't know if it would do much good. We're more of a reactive place than a defensive one so unless it happens, we won't
What I would foresee as difficult is the basis for policy. Since policy needs a solid foundation for protection of an individual, fatphobia is relative. If the organization has a weight loss contest or fitness competition, that could be construed as fatphobic. While a black history poem contest, is not relative to black history.
I would say an equal rights policy to cover one’s appearance would be a start, but then you may venture into the area of professional appearance.
Also, we used to have fitness challenges at work and stopped doing them. Even a “get your steps in” challenge is exclusionary to employees with disabilities.
