Hello! I have been an attorney for about 4 years doing consumer bankruptcy. I want to pivot into a privacy role, and i’m studying for my CIPP. I have no other experience with privacy.
just doing a basic search, most companies are wanting people with 3-5 years of experience. Has anyone transitioned into a privacy role without prior experience? If so, how long did it take to get the first position?

CIPP/US and E are good starting points. I also started writing for my state’s lawyers association on privacy topics to pad my resume.

My initial role was a non-counsel role, privacy program manager. I did that for a year, then leveraged to rotate into a privacy counsel role.

I relied on my JD for the initial role, even though they wanted experience, and was able to get in. Just align your skills with what is to be expected.

For myself, I was 3 years into practice at the time and was focused primarily on civil litigation (and some family law and probate).

I also got some tech certifications focused on IT/cybersecurity.

I transitioned into privacy/cybersecurity at a big law firm in Canada after about 6 months of cybersecurity experience. They were initially looking for a 3-5 year call. I think there are limited candidates with privacy experience at least here in Canada which allows for people with limited experience to get jobs.

This definitely isn’t true in the US. Lots of qualified privacy attorneys especially with the big tech layoffs.

For OP I’d recommend looking into privacy compliance to get some experience

Not an experience suggestion but start going to IAPP KnowledgeNet meetings or any other IAPP or privacy CLEs. It will help you meet privacy pros in your area, hear about ways you can contribute & also shows your interest in the subject to people who could become future co-workers.

Hello Fam Law attys!

I am in my second year as a attorney, I was a FL paralegal before law school and would eventually like to end up there again. I am in a very small rural area, pretty much only solos, and no FL solos appear to be hiring/expanding at this time.

Do you think experience as a DA or PD would be valuable, with my eye toward a future in FL? Both for the skills gained, and/or as a resume piece?

TY!

Received an offer for non- tech CCM role and wondering if I should accept. I feel like I was lowballed and downleved despite having 6 YOE (relevant but not in tech). Not sure it will be beneficial to leave my current role for this offer to get my foot in the door.

I’m at the cap for salary at the level/role and can’t negotiate offer any higher.

How much stock do you put on benefits? I have two offers with stark differences in benefits. Job 1: role I want, but benefit sucks (2 weeks paternity leave, 20% coinsurance). Job 2: role is okay but higher level and great benefits (16 weeks paternity, 0% coinsurance, 5 more days of vacation). Total comp is the same though. I wonder if I should just focus on role but Job 2 is a large company, so I can move around after 2-3 years I’d expect. Thoughts?

I’ve noticed on Glassdoor, salaries for my level (Director) are higher than my base but have similar bonus opportunity. At what level of pay gap would you push or make a stink? In hindsight I should have pushed more during the hiring process. At 160k base now, seeing ranges in the 170s to low 180s. These are specific to my current company.
