Rising Star
19 months sober here. It was very hard before, during, after my 4/5/6 steps, which I repeated because I found myself still being self orientated as life threw new challenges at me, including my wife saying she wanted a divorce after a year of counseling (which was about a year into my sobriety). At one point in a discussion mtg I asked "I am really struggling to know if I am, at heart, a good person who did bad things, or just a bad person? Because if it's the latter, I'm struggling to see the point in all of this". There was encouragement that day, but no easy answers. But I have found that when I walk the walk of this program - go to meetings, seek out applicable readings in AA literature, ask for help in mtgs or call my sponsor, it helps. I no longer believe I am a person beyond redemption. I was a victim of my drinking as much as others in my life were, and while I need to be accountable, I also need to understand that the sober me is different and represents a clean start from the alcoholic me. This was hard because I didn't enter the program until age 55, started drinking on a regular basis around 13, 14 years old. I've also suffered all my life from anxiety and depression. At the recommendation of my doctor who knew all what I was going through, he suggested I see a psychiatrist. I had seen one in the past and had been on a maintenance dose of 20 mg Paxil/day. Working with the psych, we took my Paxil up to 40 mg a day, and added 10 mg of busperine for anxiety 3 x a day. It made a big difference as well. I share that because many of us are dual diagnosis, with some kind of mental health issues in conjunction with addiction/alcoholism. If the program isn't fully working, it's perfectly fine to seek out professional help. I had used therapy and medication for my depression and anxiety starting in 2000, but it wasn't until I started AA that it all really started to become more effective. They have really worked together for me in ways I wasn't expecting.
Thank you so much for your message, D1. You have a good and brave soul, and are an inspiration! 🎉🎉🎉
I do things that I can see my progress in. Lifting weights. Chess. Etc. That sense of achievement goes a really long way for me. For what it’s worth, I also started cold plunging which is just amazing for my mood too.
You should just take it one step at a time. Drugs and alcohol kill your dopamine receptors, so when you're out that exacerbates all of your psychological issues - depression, anxiety, low confidence.:
Trust that it’s going to get just a little bit better each and every day you are sober because it will and over time you will feel differently.
