It all depends on the person, but it does seem pretty common that people who retire tend to do less physical activity or watch what they eat because it’s not really a requirement anymore.
There are a lot of reasons. For one, mental health issues. Veterans are also more likely to experience mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can also make it difficult to stay active.
I've stayed fairly active by golfing and skiing. I don't work out for the sake of working out but I work out so I can do these other hobbies. I think retired people especially need physical hobbies to stay young!
