I feel the same. Unfortunately, all I have to offer is my empathy. I feel like this industry just isn’t for me, but I don’t know what do do other than advertising.
Are you me?
I worked in advertising for 25 years, until I was almost 50. I worked in London, Chicago, New York and San Francisco. I had A LOT of jobs. I thought it was because I got bored but in retrospect I realized it was because I just didn’t like advertising. And I was pretty good at it. Won all the awards, worked on some pretty famous campaigns, worked with directors like Ridley Scott and David Fincher. And while I don’t regret any of it, I’ve found what I’ve been doing since advertising to be much more creatively fulfilling. I think what happened to me is I just grew out of the business. I’ve done a bunch of creative things since and enjoyed it all. I think it’s worth considering the possibility that it’s time to move on to something that is more fulfilling to you. The other possibility is that the pandemic has depressed you. That’s happened to a lot of people. It might be worth, as someone else mentioned, consulting a coach or even seeing a shrink. I’ve done both and found both to be incredibly useful. It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a recognition that we can’t always do it alone and sometimes it just makes sense to seek professional help. Best of luck to you!
Consider hiring a career coach to do some exploration for a few months! You’ll learn more about your passions and motivations and even if you don’t find “the thing”, you’ll feel more confident about the next path you want to try out.
A serious exercise:
You and I are standing on opposite sides of an elevator door thats closing. I ask you "what don't you like about advertising?" The door is closing- what do you say?
Now imagine it opens again for a second, like I was too close and triggered the automatic safety thing. But its closing again. I ask you: "whats a problem you're in love with solving?"
What do you say before it closes?
Thats where you start.
