Keep your head up! Unfortunately this is something I’ve dealt with at almost every law firm I’ve been at to one degree or another. I take it as a compliment that I’m doing something right and they’re threatened by my skill set and knowledge (after several cocktails one of them confined this to me and even apologized lol).
As long as the attorneys you work for are happy with your performance then I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Keep doing you. 🫶🏼
I actually just lost my job bc of the woman that had been there for 7 years started spreading false information about me, and saying I was creating animosity in the office, when I have been the nicest person towards her. Granted, she’s not the brightest bulb in the closet, but I have literally dumbed myself down to be able to make her feel comfortable. These catty women just think they can treat anyone however they want to and get away with it. It’s sick!!
For context I’m 22 years old and a HS drop out with a ged. Life has by no means been kind to me so I’ve worked very hard to make my life better. In the span of 2 almost 3 years I have work really hard and have been able to “climb the ladder” pretty quickly. I started off as a receptionist in January of 22 and I’m now a paralegal. I have consistently had older woman 30 yrs+ have issues with me at work. Some that had been there before me and now one that started 6 months ago.
I think it’s par for the course. I’ve been at the same firm for about 8 ish when I arrived I was young 20s and many of the older assistants and paralegals had their guard up. The paralegal that was supposed to train me, gave me nothing but scanning and photocopying. Then an associate and a senior legal assistant saw potential and took me under their wing. I think they feel threatened by you, your intelligence and drive.
I was you 20 years ago. The similarities are pretty crazy! I also dropped out of HS and took on my first job as a receptionist at a law firm. The older female manager had it out for me. Didn’t matter what I wore, she always made negative comments on how my clothes fit bc of my body type. She drove me absolutely insane to the point where I had to find a new job. I must have been 20 when I landed a job at a bigger firm and the women there weren’t any better. I even got fired from one job because one of them made up a lie about me. Unfortunately, it sounds like jealousy and like a toxic environment. I’m sorry that you’re going through that. Is it possible to complain to HR about it? Could be considered harassment. Please don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself. I really wish I had. I am 40 now and it does get better, I promise. My more mature self wouldn’t take that crap now.
I work for a very small firm, unfortunately we do not have HR and although I get a long with our two partners very well, they’re not the best managers when it comes to things like this. I usually am pretty good at just going about my day and ignoring it. However, it’s been so rough these last couple occasions. There’s a part of me that wants to call her out on her bs but at the same time I don’t want to be the one viewed as confrontational or aggressive, Especially since I’ve worked so hard to get to where I am. It’s really frustrating to say the least 😅
Sue them all for harassment!
This was literally my life when I worked at small firms. Now I work at a bigger place with people my age and it's sooo much better. I do think it's just jealousy
Do you mean one woman or many women?
