I come from a very small firm and would always buy my boss a gift for Christmas and one coworker I loved. This year I’m at a larger firm of about 50 people and am curious about gifts. Who do you buy something for? Should I buy gifts for support staff? Just the attorneys I work with? All of them? And what do you generally give people? Thanks

Don't gift up. They should give _you_ a Christmas gift!

like

Usually it’s raises and bonuses

I never bought attorneys gifts while working at a large law firm. Not all attorneys will buy you gifts either. Same with staff support, you can bring baked goods but I wouldn’t.

I’ve never bought or received a Christmas gift for or from a coworker or boss (besides a company-given bonus). I’ve worked at large firms and small legal teams. I think a baked good to share with the office would be nice.

like

I would be confused if my support staff gave me a gift having value. If you got me a card or something cute though, that could be nice and would be unexpectedly thoughtful.

like

I would NOT be concerned with Christmas gifts. Don't stress that.

like

When gifts were given out at my office it was something small for everyone like a bag of chocolates or a tiny bottle of champagne from one attorney to each paralegal but we never gave them gifts. The office did a raffle to give out Christmas presents too.

like

Don’t gift up. Unless you’re super close to an attorney you work with and would consider them more than a boss, you never gift up. Last year I got my fellow support staff each like a $5 gift (socks for the ladies, cotton candy for the guys) and received a few things in return.

like

Usually they do a Secret Santa drawing or something. Or depending how many attorneys you support, may just something small if it is more than a few.

I used to give gifts when I worked in a small firm. But then I moved to a bigger firm. I gave my secretary a gift, an attorney I worked closely with and one of the paralegals that helped me just to show appreciation. Other than that, you should not gift everyone. They should be giving you gifts.

PARTNERS: two questions —1. If you see an associate has really low hours for the month, do you imagine them chillen on a beach somewhere or do you consider they probably spent most of their days sitting in front of the computer being “available”? 2. If you send an associate a random e-mail on a weekend like “Can you pull X and send to Y”, would you get annoyed if they responded saying they weren’t by a comp or would you consider it reasonable that they wouldn’t be by a comp on a weekend?

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

I’ve worked 14+ days every day in November except yesterday when I only logged 6 hours of work (billable plus non-billable) (were required to upload our time every night now). How long should I wait after hanging up with our CFO just now who called me to tell me I’m behind and slacking to update my resume?

Does anyone have a go-to "odd" or unconventional question you like to ask candidates to keep them on their toes or see how they react when put on the spot?

Working for a senior who is beyond horrible. She talks to you like you’re stupid and makes it sound like you’re absolutely terrible at what you’re doing. She’s made 5 other associates cry during her 5 year career. Got someone fired and made another person quit. It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. I came along and thought I could deal with it but she literally makes me want to not log on tomorrow.

I've been working at this company for about 3.5 weeks now. Its been great so far.

We have an org chart in our dashboard ATS/HRIS and so I clicked on my first day buddies name just for fun.

I was able to see her entire employee file..even her address. I was really freaked out and I went to another profile and the same thing happened, I was able to see this person's emergency contact. Is this fucking normal? Should I say something and will I get in trouble for looking at a colleagues file?

I’m beyond irritated by one of my coworkers. Just so disorganized, doesn’t show up to meetings, doesn’t reply to emails, constantly have to chase him, miss deadlines because of him. Management knows but does nothing about it. He really is a nice guy so it’s hard to hate him but I’m gonna lose it sooner or later. I’ve tried talking to him, I’ve tried escalating, putting reminders on his calendar. Nothing works. What are my options? Suck it up or leave? This is unnecessary stress for me

Been for a company for over 2years. The executive team is very much a boy's club. There are a few women in management roles but zero ethnicity diversity there. I raised my concern to HR in feb. And they are just now deciding to do something about it. They want me (white female) to put together a diversity committee. Any suggestions on how to go about it? How to attract volunteers to the committee? I want to make sure I get the right people involved in this, to push for changes.

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.
